428 block info

What's an average price for a good usable 428 block? I'd like one that I can boil, bore, hone and deck and have it ready to use. What is a block that I can accomplish the above worth? What should I expect to pay? Are there any real significant differences between the various 428 blocks?

Well there are a few types of 428 blocks. The std 428 "A" blocks with the std webbing found in the Tbirds and wagons etc... And the 428 CJ/SCJ "C" blocks with the HD webbing and crank saddle. The "A and C" are a sandscratch found on the rear bulkhead of the blocks. Then there are the service and industrial blocks that were made up until 74 which were cast exactly as the "C" CJ blocks. Any of these blocks will fit the bill but most will look for the HD webbed blocks. If you find a 428 block with the vertial ribs on the side it's a 70 era service or industrial. The blocks date code will tell you when it was made. 2 dots under the first number of the date code denotes a 69 or later casting. If you see a 428 block with a "S" sandscratch on the back grab it. It should have crossbolt bosses (to crossbolt the block if desired) and 427 cyl wall cores. Know what that means right?? There are also the early 428 66-67 PI blocks of which some 66's can be solid lifter blocks. The "C" blocks go for the most as the numbers resto guys pay the big bucks for correct blocks and date codes. Prices can be all over but start around $300 for a decent seasoned block and go upwards of $2k for the date code CJ stuff. Some NOS service blocks are still out there and go for $2800. The average prices seem to be between $400-800 for a nice 428 block.

It would make a great motor for a 65 Falcon, Fairlane, 67 fastblack Mustang or Cobra. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. 427 pistons and pay someone like Keith Craft to crossbolt it. ?????
