Ricky Lake how does a 6 speed fit? Which one are you running? I wonder if a tremec form a terminator (2003 Cobra) would fit.

ng8264723 My ERA was built for a 6spd trans in the car. Richmond Had just came out with it. This trans is good for 450ft of torque and 450 HP. Without the supercharger on the car and a 452 stroker motor I was at 448 ft of tork. I also got this trans for my 79TA when it gets restored. I have gone to a G-Force clutchless 5 speed. These are not cheap but good for 1k hp or torque. They look just like the Doug Nash 5 spd trans. Richmond just came out with a new 6 spd with a higher torque and HP rating. The only thing that needs to be done is the trans mount is 1" back from all the other in lenght. You may want to look at a T-56 trans from G-force. They have a kit that gets these trans to 800 hp and tork. The biggest thing is matching the torque band to the drive train and your cruising mode or racing. I run 3.31 gears in my car. If you go with any of the trans above get a 3.00 or less 1st gear. The 2.87 would be good. At cruising speeds alot of guys are running high HP motors without a low torque band. You want the motor to be in the torque band by 500 rpm. This will stop lugging and damage to the drivetrain and clutch disc which absorbs the lugging. If the 5 spd is your answer with a 5 gear of 1-1, a 3.07 gears or in this area of 3.00 would be ok. DON'T BEAT THE CRAP out of the car. These gear ratios are not as strong as the 3.31 or higher. When you build your car, over built it. Go for the best parts, strongest, with warranty's, Over engineer the car. This will keep break downs to a min. You will beat on the car. Every one does. MY personal thought is to stay away from the Tremmec's. I know guys that have raced them for years and have spares they bring to the race track and swap out in 20 minutes. Go home and rebuild them for the next race. This trans is good for normal street driving but track racing and hard driving, I would look at other manufactures. Check out the Mustang clubs. Alot of guys are going to the beefed up T-56, Viper, Vette, or F-Body trans. TKO 600 A couple of guys are running with big HP and have had no problems. Check out Morris for this. His brother is one of the smooooothest drivers on a track for driving and not hurting the car. If you want to talk call me in the evening. 732-254-3536 Rick L. Ps Ricky is my cousin NOT

Jerry,

One of our Ford guys here suggested the same mod when I first started buiding my FE. Also, I can assure you there will not be three drivers and one car....ever at Run and Gun. I really hope to meet you next year at Run and Gun.


Five lug nuts are overkill, three would work just fine just ask Roger Penske.

I have seen Morris at Road America and Gateway and his car is a rocket. Well constructed, maintained, and driven both by himself and his brother Steve. Both men are excellent drivers and they each know about how to process feedback better than I do about myself. I wish I could afford that kind of overkill.

Anyway...getting back to the question, they work out muy goodo.

I've got a 482 Shelby with a bigassed solid cam (.680 lift) which does just fine with a wide ratio toploader and a 3.31 rear. Huge powerband and less shifting...power's available for anything you'll need for open tracking in without having to downshift a lot. (Shifting is what can upset the car if you don't know what the heck you're doing.) Allows you to pay attention to driving until you decide you're a real race driver...then you can watch Morris pass your ass and bring you back to reality.

Did I mention I let a friend drive my Cobra the other day? At a stop light he shifted into THIRD and let the clutch out, from a dead stop! The motor didn't miss a beat, I was amazed. It just lugged right down to the lowest possible rpm and we pulled away smoothly, unreal!

Having a big block means never having to downshift (I think Jamo said that once).

How tall is third? It will do WELL over a 100 in third.

Did you see the Top Gear where they took a new Z06 and set a new record for widest speed range in one gear...something like from 25mph to 175.

Didn't hurt that car either.

Allan test drove mine and gave it the Gashole seal of approval. Don't know if he tried the ultra low rpm mph spread. Interesting numbers concerning the Vette.

It's all about bottom end torque, a "no replacement for displacement" kinda thing.. At 81 mph I'm at 1400 rpm and knocking down 28 mpg in my Z. Give it some gas at that RPM and it still moves out smartly. Except for the 1400 rpm and 28 mpg parts my Cobra has the same characteristics. The increased cubes become addictive.
