Well... the timing was double checked, the cam timing checked, starting fluid used and not even a fart. The plugs had been cleaned the coil and spark plugs checked for spark and every thing seemed OK. I think I'll take the distributor to B&R here and have Bob put it on his machine. The Pertronic may be a problem and I could try points and condenser to see if it will start.

I am not sure it this applies, but I have a Petronix in my 65 Comet that I used to replace the points. However it went bad twice. Once the car just quit running and no fire at all. Next time it had a weak spark at the plug. I had the distributor checked and found that the shaft had worn so much it was wobbling a little and that would throw off the Petronix. I put the points back in and drove it until I could get a new distributor. I now have the Petronix in the new distrinbutor, but carry the points in the trunk just in case.

This AM I took the distributor and coil to B&R here in Phoenix and had Bob Ream put it on his dist. machine. He said the pertronix was bad. The first time he had seen one go bad. I had him put in points and condenser and run it in.
This "should" fix the problem.

John,

That is great that you located the problem. I had never seen a Petronix go bad before mine did and that was why I messed around half a day trying to figure out what was wrong. Now I have had this one in for about 4 years and no problems, but I still carry the points and condenser in the trunk in my tool kit along with a spare coil and wire.

Guess I'm a dinosaur because I come from the old school of mechanical points and then the first generation of HEI Ignition systems. A bluish white spark was required to insure good spark to jump the gap on the spark plug. At the risk of sounding stupid could anybody enlighten me as to what this Pertronix is that all of you are talking about? It's been many years since I was a mechanic. John as for putting in old style points and condensor my first thought is make sure you have a ballast resistor ahead of the coil somewhere dropping the voltage from 12V to about 9V or else you run the risk of burning up the primary windings in your coil. JMHO.

I've neglected, I think, to relate what was found finally. The MSD coil overpowered the Pertronics and damaged it because of no ballast resister. I called pertronics and they told me to use their coil or put a resister in line. I bought their system then took it to Troy at Modern Automotive in Phoenix (he's closer than B&R) and everything is golden. Runs great. Apparently some spark isn't enough in some cases. Whew!
