Default 580hp. Does that sound right?

I was just informed the engine has been dyno'd and is ready to ship.
They found one of the dyno sheets and said it was 580 hp / 610 tq.

They didn't know if this was the final dyno but does that sounds right? I'm not complaining but I thought this package would make 600+ with no problem.
I know this post is missing key details (dyno sheets will be emailed to me shortly).

But here is what I know:
•crank & rotating assembly
•hp heads
•Edebrock Perf RPM intake
•Quck Fuel 780 vacuum sec. carb
•hi perf rockers
•Crane Hyd. roller lifters
•Comp Cam Hyd. roller cam
Here is all the info I have from Keith on the cam:
"You will be getting a FE hydraulic roller camshaft that is a 33-000-9 core with the following information;
Intake you want a # 3113 lobe number
Exhaust you want a # 3170 lobe number
112 lobe separation with 4 degrees advance ground into the camshaft

Like I said, I'm not complaining and 580hp is way more than my cobra needs. It must be the adrenaline talking.

In that set of hardware it's all about the cam. You wouldn't notice the difference in 580-600 HP anyway. With the TQ over 600 there will be more than enough to keep you clenched.

That cam is a 242/248 duration at .050".

That's a milder cam for a 482ci engine. That's about what I would expect, horsepower wise, for the combo. I would imagine the peak is around 5500-5800 as well. Should be a torque monster.

That's fine by me. Like I said it was the adrenaline talking. Can you believe I switched from doing a 331 to this and I'm still wanting more. Maybe I should just go have a Heiny Light and chill out.

xlr8or - I had a poorly built side oiler in a Unique car years ago. It probably didn't make more than 450hp and it was a handful. You are right: 580 hp is going to feel light a space shuttle booster to me.

I think you'll be more than happy with the results of that motor in your car.

My motor is only 425hp, and makes 320 to the wheels. My car is far from "slow". At 580 motor, which should be about 400-425 to the wheels in a Cobra with sidepipes, that car should fly no problem.

Having a Cobra is mainly about having fun and having bragging rights. If you're not satisfied with the power, now's the time to change it...while it's still at KC's shop. More cam, more carb, and more intake would net a lot more horsepower. You could even stay with a hydraulic roller grind.

Those figures are pretty much what , IMHO , what is needed . My 482 puts out 612 hp at 5800 rpm , but , more importantly , 528 ft lbs at 2500 rpm , 620 ft lbs at 4100 and holds 529 ft lbs at 6000 rpm .... basically a flat torque curve . This is exactly what I wanted as torque gets you out of a turn and accelerating hard , hp is a top end/hi rpm figure .
With that much torque , you might have to repair the driver`s seat where you took some "bites" out of it .... have fun !!!

My Shelby 482 has a hydraulic roller cam with a 112 LSA, 244/252 duration and .618/.638 lift. It made about 581 with a rich mixture and, when leaned out, made 601. So you're HP is fine. As mentioned above, change the cam, intake manifold and/or carb and you can get another 25-75 +/- HP, if so desired.

I kinda kick myself now for not going a notch larger with the cam. Eh, I'll live with it.

Sounds like you got the same motor as me. Mine came in at 589 hp/ 602 tq. I'm pretty sure in a light car this should be sufficient. I am working towards a milder more reliable motor and taking as much weight off the car as is prudent. If I can get a set of magnesium wheels, I should be down to 2300 lb. This is like having a 660 hp motor in a car that weighs 2550.

Well, I have the mild street motor: 570 hp, 613 tq I finally had an opportunity to stomp on it last weekend and actually OPEN THE SECONDARIES I was entering Dallas North Tollway, and there were two lanes and some lamer in a BMW or something decided to pass me in the toll plaza. I floored it in second and OMG! .. talk about a cat shot! Billboard Goodyears broke loose, FE made big racket. To the tolltaker (I had a toll tag) .. I am soooo sorry I scared the sh!t out of you .. I won't do it no more

Hi-tech, if 580 isn't enough for you .. just lie!

I wouldn't change a thing. the only regret I have with my csx is having the 496 built. I wish I would have stayed with my home built cast iron 427. I personally believe my car would be lots more fun to drive with a good strong 450hp I could speed shift and wring out than the 760 it has now. It is faster than I can lie about but there is no way I can drive it to it's potential on the street.I will go so far to say a good strong 390 may be the most fun.just my 2 cents,,Tk

Ok,

I confess, I am the wimp in this group. I told Keith I wanted a mild driver with a masculine rumble. He delivered. 427/482. 530 hp at 5400. 604 ft/lbs at 4400. Screamer of the line. I love it. Ka-thunk ruble at the light, revs great and 'pops' the exhaust note like she wants to step on you. Did I mention 35 mpg? ;-)

Hi-tech-

Yes we have the same Comp cams hydraulic roller. The power/weight thing is a rough ratio. If my car was 2550 vs 2300, this is a 10% change in weight, so to maintain the same power to weight ratio I would need an extra 10% in the HP area as well or 660. Weight reduction has other benefits as well beyond just acceleration. Braking, cornering, feel of the car, and dare I say fuel mileage are all affected in a positive way when your car is lighter.

I just ordered a 15 lb. battery for the car instead of the normal 40+ lb units. It costs $150, or about double of a regular battery, but saves me 25 lb. Every part for the car I try and find out the weight and see what else is out there. Lightweight Aeroquip lines for the oil cooler saves another 12-14 lb. It all adds up.

And don't forget to put helium in the tires.

Hi tech cobra Have you weighted your car? I think you will find it weights is a little more than 2,550 lbs. Mine is 2,705 with 1/2 tank of gas and an all aluminium shelby motor. The only thing added to my car is an appleton P/S rack, pump, cooler, and tank. This doesn't weight 120 pounds. As far as the power on the car, only a dyno will give you the real numbers. Your motor has a little bigger cam than mine, we are the same cubes. I have not dynoed in my motor yet but guessing and retarding the cam, real numbers 480 hp and 560-570 ft of torque. Yes It's a hand full to drive. Your exhaust will cost you about 15-40hp with back pressure. This would be a good place to start with missing HP. Another would be the intake manifold and having it ported so all the ports have the same flow numbers or within 5-7 cfm. Guessing from 5-15 HP. The camshaft could be advanced to give you another 5-10HP or retarded for more torque and taking some of the top end HP out of it. There are other tricks you could do to inprove the HP and Torque, but in some cases, this will cost you in drivability and gas mileage. Dyno the car and go from there. Rick L.
