Default 427 went south

So the car is running fine yesterday. I grab the wife to go for a cruise...runs fine ...then all of a sudden starts missing pretty bad. I can still drive it but like I said missing pretty bad ( like I was running on 6-7 cylinders instead of 8) at idle black smoke out of side pipes and smells rich. I have noticed the last few times out that after I shut it off it seemed to flood ...would have to put the peddle to the floor to get it to start again. Does this sound carb releted or something scary like a cam lobe gone south or something else....? Thoughts? I think I will try a new carb later today or tomorrow?
Certainly seems like the black smoke would indicate carb problem?
Would the car run that poorly with a carb issue?

Take the air cleaner off and look inside the carb to see if there is raw fuel dumping - it may be a stuck needle and seat.

Pats got a good suggestion, also take a look at the distributor drive gear, mismatched gear alloys, chipped or worn teeth.

Power Valve is blown in the carb dumping raw fuel into the idle circuit.

well not exactly sure what the problem with the carb was but I did put my other carb on it an 1hr ago and all is great...runs "better" than before idles better the whole ball of wax. Thanks all.
PS lineslinger....as a rule I check my gear about every 500 miles just cause I have replaced a busted one before...very easy to replace"before"! it breaks.

If you are going to do any work on your Holley power valve circuit, do yourself a favor and get one of these:

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/1240...ve-Tester.html

Use it to test your old valve to make sure that the valve is actually the problem. Use it to test any new power valve before you install it in the carb. I used to go through four to six before I found one which actually opened at the value specified on the package. Some of them were off by 50%. The local speed shop would let me test them in the store to make sure they were opening at the proper value before I paid for them.
