Default Oil cooler

What are the pro vs cons on havin my oil cooler hooked up. Thought it was but as usual I was wrong. Oil will reach 235deg. around town. I mite switch to a strait 50 oil for summer, maybe that will help a little..

You want your oil pretty hot, so the oil cooler is just for looks. On the track, you need the cooler.

In slower drivin my oil gets around 230-240 deg...At what temp does it become a problem ?

Just like a transmission,you can OVER-cool your oil.

Question Is there a burning smell in the oil??

Sparks The suggested temp range is between 210f-240f. There are a bunch of variables on this, weight of oil, synthetic or conventional, size of cooler lines, amount of bends in the lines, location of the lines and are they insulated from other heat sources. The first test I would do before getting worried is MAKEN sure that your temp gauge is readying CORRECT numbers. Is it a mechanical or electrical one. Do you have a temp infrared gun to spot check. I have seen the numbers 5-15 degrees off between location and gauge readings. My cobra has SW gauges and they are 10 degrees off between the oil pan and the dash of the car. The gauge tube runs out side by the oil pan up to the hole in the dash and then into the gauge. The heat from the motor and headers is enough to skew the readings. You said this happens at slow speeds and stop and go traffic. IMO I think you answered your own question. I run 12 quarts of 15W-40 Rotella and a bottle of EOS and lucas oil suppliment in my car. Racing at the R&G I get to 230f, on the road course. Some guys are higher and some are lower. I have an all Aluminum CS motor and it can cook hotdogs on the intake. Check the basics before you start going on a witch hunt. Rick L.

230-240 just piddlin' around town?? If you're not experiencing any overheating issues with the coolant, and your engine bay doesn't feel like a blast furnace when you open the hood, I would suspect your gauge is wrong, as Rick L. mentioned. Shoot it with an infrared gun at different spots and see what kind of numbers you get. 240 for around town driving is really, really hot.
