Default Dual Quad drop base air cleaner housing

While reading the thread on the billet air cleaner housing I was admiring some of the nice fabricating on different styles of drop base air cleaner housings.

I am curious if anyone has fabricated or knows of a dual quad drop base housing that will accept the K@N 3" air cleaner. My engine needs the larger CFM's allowed by this filter but it does create hood scoop clearance problems. I can make it work if I can pick up 3/4" more clearance.

I second that inquiry.
I have FE 427, Dove Tunnel Wedge with inline dual four Holley 600 CFM 1850's. I do not like the two Stelling and Helling air cleaners I have now. I feel the small foam elements are restrictive. I have two K&N elements for them but they will not let the hood close, so I don't use the K&N elements.
I have several oval air cleaners and filter elements but without a drop base they hold up the hood.

well, i have been toying with this idea. now that others have asked also, i think i should start some r&d on this. i have a manufacturing facility. i can engineer this and prototype it. i need to know what you guys are looking for and what intake and carbs are you running. i was thinking to make a base only that utilizes the common oval air cleaner tops we all see and use, i have a blue thunder 2-4 intake and the factory holleys that came originally on fords. what do you guys have?

Fred, that would be your largest market, IMHO. Just make sure that you consider throttle arm clearance in the equation...that's one of the limiting factors. Let me know if you need some measurements from my current set-up (i.e. how much more I can go on a Mighty Demon before I have to break out the files/rasps).

so you have a single 4bbl....? there are drop base single 4 air cleaner housings out there, not for the oval type but standard circular ones. the dual 4bbl set ups are the problem. the unique center to center distances.

I'm very much aware of those (i.e. Moroso units). I just believe that there is a far greater market in the Cobra hobby for the single 4 bbl versions (especially for the oval air cleaner base), which is why I brought it up. No harm, no foul...build whatever you want to sell.

Agreed. You may have to zero-in on the most prevalent set-up (i.e. the dual Holley squirters seem to be just that) and go from there. Otherwise you may find yourself with multiple configurations. Sorry I can't help you with measurements for that, but I'm sure you will get some others to pitch in.

dean,
no harm taken, really. the hurdle in designing one will not be the carb hole or holes as that is a easy change to make during production. the idea of making it fit most applications in clearing linkages will be the issue. once a design is made to pop one hole or two will be a couple second edit. in looking at my set-up preliminary thoughts are the current width of the aircleaner may have to be widened to get enough room to fit a higher element because of the proximity of the linkage.
