Default Best FI for install/price

Without trying to break the bank, what's the best FI system out there for both cost and install. I have a Roush 427 (351W) and want something which doesn't cost $10K and yet will still perform with the current motor. And the problem I've had with some systems is the fact Roush won't publish the cam specs to give the companies, so any experience with a Roush conversion would be great!!!

Thanks in advance,
Dan

From what i have read, the Mass-Flow system will be your easiest install since you won't have to buy an ECU and wire the whole car as you would with an individual throttle body setup like TWM. The other nice thing is that you won't have to worry about your cam specs since it doesn't really care about it, it works on "air in, fuel to match" type of setup. The hardest part will be running a fuel return line. Its nice too because you can continue to use your roush air cleaner etc.

Hi Dan,
I agree with James, if you are not looking for the stack appearance or weber style EFI then you should check out the data on Mass-flo. I put their system on my SPF and really like it. It is basically a Ford EFI setup uses an A9L computer and the kit includes just everything, wire harness, fasteners, relays, sensors etc. Running fuel lines is not a problem, much easier than I thought it would be, and I was able to convert fuel pump and filter setups almost directly over from my stock part locations. They also offer a fuel line kit which includes all the little pieces needed plus high pressure lines and fittings. Search mass-flo or mass flo or EFI over at ffcobra.com they have a ton of info. This system also "learns" to some extent, will improve with use. I have photos from most every area of my install, pm or email me if you want more info from me, good luck

Default Mass Flo

I agree, Mass Flo is a nice system. I installed mine, no problem. Great product, great customer support. Without a doubt I would buy it again. PS, buy the fuel line kit he sells with the fuel pump, you will be glad you did. I have some pics in my gallery of the fuel pump mount.

Thanks guys, what was the total price with all the "extras"...I need to see if selling my first born will cover the cost or if I'll have to throw the wife in the deal.

The trade in on wives these days is down.. we are all under water on that purchase.

I think for a 427 stroker up to 600HP its gonna be 3200 dollars, the extras are probably a couple hundred bucks. Thats the price they gave me when I looked. Its roughly half the cost or less than a stack system and none of the wiring or (and especially) tuning headaches.

Some other units to consider:
Here is a system comparable to Motec. This is probably what I am going to try on my next engine.

You might want to take a look at Retrotek. They have a fairly new system that installs in place of a 4150 carb with very few wiring additions and no fuel return line. Its going to take a phone call it seems since I've not gotten a response to an e-mail request for more information.

http://retrotekspeed.com/

Interesting idea to say the least and an estimated price of around 2K.

Another unit I came across is:
http://kms.vankronenburg.nl
also at www.van-kronenburg.nl

www.autronic.com
From their website:
Ford Shelby Cobra Concept car is released at North American International Auto Show. This car is fitted with a 6.5L V10 aluminum engine which makes 605 HP. The car uses a SM2 1.95 with ignition expander and R500 CDI.

I've got the edelbrock system and it was $2400.It came with everything (including the return line , fuel pump and filter , computer, manifold with 1000cfm throtle body, wire harness, everything). It does'nt like high overlap ,low vacume cams. My 402 ci. Windsor works great and it seems to be getting more and more efficient.Nobody ever talks about the Edelbrock system, maybe I am ignorant of some problem but it was easy to install 5 or less wires ,complete (except for dist. cam gear and air cleaner) ,started right up and low cost for a fi system. My 2 cents. Peter

Peter,

I've heard some really good things about the Edelbrock system. My reason for suggesting the Retrotek system is it doesn't work off of a vacum signal, instead it works off of throttle position. I however do Not have hands on personal experience with their system. I have used some of their shifting products and have very good luck with them. For me its between the Edelbrock and the Retrotek system.

Don,

I have been trying to get my Mass-Flo system to work right for almost three weeks. Finally found what looks to be a bad MAF signal converter box. Had to send the parts back twice to Chris. I am waiting for them now. Glad to hear you are happy with the system. I was starting to have my doubts. Where did you end up installing the O2 sensors, in the collectors or the primary pipes?

Thanks,

Ken

The most important consideration is support.

Most of the systems will work. It's finding the guys who can work on it if there're problems. Or if you need programming help.

Hi Ken,
Sorry to hear you have had problems. I had some glitches as well, sorted out fairly quickly tho and had good advice from Chris at Mass-flo. The MAF signal converter would be a tough problem to find, hopefully a new one will get you going quickly. I asked a lot of questions and searched a lot of forums on the 02 sensor question, primary tube install to be specified distance from head vs downstream install to sample all 4 tubes - options included a spacer block between headers and side pipes with an 02 bung installed but that would move the side pipes out over an inch, some install a heated sensor down where the primaries converge etc. I went with a primary tube install, seems to be working well, not sure it is the best place but the wiring stays hidden well and it is the correct length from the head. How did you do yours?

Thanks for the information. It looks like a very clean install. My O2 sensors are located in the collectors just after the primaries come together. I will have to wait and see how it works.

Thanks,

Ken

Put a Mass-Flo system on my FE over the winter and am very pleased with the results.
Dynoed with the carb installed before I started and again after the Mass-Flo was installed. Gained 25 hp and 15 lb/ft. Actually though I'd loose a little so was pleasantly surprised.
A couple of teething problems when I first ran the engine after the installation in that it was running too lean. A couple of phone calls to Chris and following his advice to get into the ball park and, when the dust settled he burned a new chip for me and I haven't looked back since.
Major difference in the dyno sheets when you look at the hp and torque curves. The EFI results are extremely smooth and consistent compared to the carb print outs.
Relatively easy to install and everything needed was included. Went with his fuel system also.
Had a chance to try it at altitude at WSCB when we went over Mt. Rose (8-9 thousand feet) and I couldn't tell the difference from sea level. No longer have to make estimates on how many pumps of the gas pedal to give it before cold starts to get it to fire up, just turn the key.

Here is a system that I just saw at the Carlisle Ford show. It's self tuning and is suppose to get to 99% effiecency all you do is install it start it up and drive around and it dials itself in. It has the injectors in the throttle bodies and looks like a Weber setup. A little pricey but not as bad as some. The company is DynatekRacing

Eric, at Performance Engineering in Ross, Ohio will be installing one of the first Dynatek systems on my 392 stroker within the next few weeks (I've been waiting months for production to begin)!!! Looks like a great system. Self learning based on conditions, etc. Supposed to be able to flow 2400cfm (like a 392 would need it) . Will be changing heads and side pipes at the same time with before and after chassis dyno runs. If I think of it, I'll update after I get it back in September.
