Hi fellow canucks,

I started a petition on change.org to hopefully get the Canadian laws on kit cars changed. We want a more open market that will allow replica cars to be enjoyed by Canadians like they are in the US and UK.

Please sign it if you agree. Please pass it on to others too! The more signatures the better.

Transport Canada: Remove the ban on imports, let Canadians buy vintage replica cars.

I have seen many finished kit cars, from the states. Most are built by builders who have little or no automotive experience. The safety of the builds, once completed, is scarey. No I will not ask our government to change the current policy. Even if importing replica's from the states was allowed. Changing the imported car to meeting our safety requirements is very expensive. It would shock you to see how much creativety is used to build the kits. Some ideas just are not safe.

What I sent to my MP: "The rules are arbitrary and illogical. Well-engineered kit cars or 'rollers' (completed replica automobiles except for engine & transmission) are prohibited, yet anyone can build something in their garage or workshop without demonstrating any form of engineering, fabrication or manufacturing competence. Home built and kit cars all need to pass safety inspection before they can be registered and licensed, so lift the ban and allow kit cars and 'rollers' into Canada."

Response from my MP:

"Thank you for your letter regarding the decision to ban home built and kit cars from Canada. I appreciate hearing the concerns of my constituents.

Since this matter falls under the jurisdiction of Transport Canada, I will forward your letter to the Minister of Transport the Hon. Lisa Raitt requesting her full attention to this ban and to the issues you have outlined in your email and the attached link.

You just asked him to allow importation of kit cars and he understood banning home built and kit cars FROM Canada. In other words the complete opposite of what you asked. I think you may be muddying the waters with this request instead of what your looking for. If it said " from ENTERING Canada" in his reply, you'd be closer.

Ang: I don't believe the verbiage in the email to my MP was ambiguous. It read, in part: "Home built and kit cars all need to pass safety inspection before they can be registered and licensed, so lift the ban and allow kit cars and 'rollers' into Canada."

While the response from MP Andrew Scheer (also a candidate for leader of the CPoC) may have been misleading, especially when read out of context, my email was quite clear in stating "...lift the ban and allow kit cars and 'rollers' into Canada."

Well I agree with you my friend. If the car goes through an inspection upon completion and it passes where other cars have passed there shouldn't be a problem. I personally never understood the double standard that applies to motoring safety. If your allowed to ride a motorcycle which has no crumple zones/ no seat belts / no air bags and only two tiny contact patches of rubber on the road, the Law is essentially saying that it's ok for a rider to become a human torpedo but a car that DOES have some or all of these criteria AND already legal in other countries is not accepted. Zero sense. How can they share the same roads and the more dangerous vehicle is awarded the right to be licensed?
