I'll be pulling the oil pan on my 289 soon, think I have some gunk clogging up the pick up screen. I want to pull the pan, clean out the pan & also clean the screen.

Anti-freeze got in the oil (long story, no engine damage though) and I think that is making the oil at the bottom of the pan get lumpy and being sucked onto the screen. I read about this on the internet.

Oil pressure was 40 on a warm engine, 50 with a cold engine. Now it's 25, warm or cold.

Any tips on how to hold the gasket in place while I install the oil pan? Of course, the engine will be in the car when I do this.

I RTV mine in place. Be careful not to use to much. Then cut the head off of some long bolts and use them for a guide or alignment pin. This makes it easier sense you are under the car. I use RTV on both sides of the gasket. Then lightly torque the bolts in place. Let the RTV set up and then finish torque.

Thanks Don. I did them before on engine rebuilds but the engine was upside down on an engine stand, now I have to do it from underneath the car.

I like the idea involving using bolts as a guide. Not really looking forward to this messy job though, guess it goes with the territory!

Yes not a fun job.
I have a canton pan on mine and it made it difficult sense it was not an OE pan. Sometimes aftermarket just does not fit the same!

Let me know if there are any good car shows coming up, that you may be going to. Wouldn't mind making a road trip up that way and meeting everyone.

Don,

Well it turns out I may not have to drop the pan afterall. I may have jumped the gun making that call. I didn't actually get much anti-freeze in the oil, maybe a cup or two. I changed oil & the filter twice since then. Both times I used a Fram filter.

Today after work I took off the crap Fram oil filter I had on it & installed a WIX. Oil pressure went right back up to 50 psi. I'm going to keep an eye on it to see if it comes back.

I'll put together a list of some of the better shows we have around here & post them tomorrow. Be great if you could make one or two of them!
