Has anyone had to replace the door latch mechanism?

Any tips, tricks or how-to advice?

I have not done any work on replacing the latch. Would presume you would need to cut out some of the inner door liner. have you had any luck?

No, I haven't started the project yet as I just received the latching mechanism from the supplier yesterday.

Last summer I rebuilt the hinges on both doors with new bushings and hinge pins and I noticed that the previous owner had to remove part of the inner door liner to replace the door handle on the driver side door: I'm not certain that was necessary but, I'll find out!

The other thing I noticed while redoing the hinges was the hinge mounts; pretty wimpy compared to the massive hinges Roger used to support a fairly light weight door. I'm going to try to reinforce them as well.

I absloutely hate working on doors!

Ken,

Here is a thought on how I would get the latch out. Cut a hole in the center of the inner panal. This will provide access to the back of the latch to get to the nuts. You can place your hand and arm though it with a tool. Then cut out the inner panel around the latch to get to the heads of the bolts.
Not sure what you mean by wimpy hinge mounts. Key here is to not use washers for spacers. Figure out the thickness needed and then mack a shim that thick and the size of the plate. The hinge was not picked to support the door but to provide support for side impact. Put the two side impact bars in the door together with the hinges and industial latch. You now have the best side impact system offered on the cobra. Next to the West Coast Cobra.

Don,

The hinge mount is made from 1/16th stamped steel and flexes when the slighest pressure is exerted on the door, producing excessive droop.

I'll let you know how it goes although, it could be a while before I get to it.

Did I mention I hate working on doors?
