This was something my dad put together. I was going to start it up but for some reason cannot get oil pressure. I know he had oil pressure the last time ran it. It is somewhat concerning.

A quick check is pull the pressure sender plumb a tube into something give it a couple of spins it should almost instantly squirt oil.

I removed the sender from the block and hit the starter. After 3 seconds, oil came out of the opening and went all over. I cleaned the oil up and reattached the sender but never saw the oil make it up the tube. I should have been more specific. I have oil but it doesnt appear like there is much. When my dad fired up this engine, I know it had good oil pressure. This was around 4 years ago.

Next thing is to plumb a known good gauge and try again. If it spewed out of the block you know the pump is pumping deadheading the line with gauge will verify that the bypass is also working. I have a pressure gauge with short piece of line and fitting just to check this important function.

Good point.. I will get a different gauge and check. Just out of curiosity, my plans were to stay with a mechanical fuel pump, would this be sufficient to handle my needs? I plan on going with a decent cam, ported c9ve heads, RPM lower intake, and a Holley 850.

Yes, more than enough with the right pump. Mine has a Holley racing pump with a regulator plumbed in. The 460 has a healthy cam ported polished Ford Racing aluminum heads, custom racing headers and a 1000 cfm Davinci double pumper.
Keep in mind other than racing running sustained speeds we should never get into fuel problems unless the pump is weak or the fuel lines are too restrictive.
