Ok, so I made a HUGE mistake in my build. I had this really awesome idea of mounting the body to the floor pan in the thoughts of being able to life the whole body off frame if I needed to in the future. My HUGE error is where the steering support comes into play. There is no way to fit that steering support in after the pan is glassed to the body. You could say that I am in a world of hurt.

Maybe you can cut it and make brackets to bolt it back together, or cut it and weld it back together once it's in place??

Cutting it and placing some brackets front to back with two grade 8 bolts might work. This is something that I was thinking of a few minutes ago. Not sure how the bracket would work out in the front with the dash having to mount. I may need to place the bracket top and bottom. I should have known better than to mount the pan to body without placing that support in there. It definitely makes for a much easier lift of body off frame though.

I also gave this a lot of thought to be able to remove the body one day. Fortunately it went together very well now with the removal of 8 bolts drilled and tapped into the frame that task would be easy. Funny thing is I will probably never need to take the body off the frame.

Hello ziggy75, Somewhere on the down support legs of the dash/steering support frame you could cut and install hinges to allow legs to swing inward. On the upper half at the hinge, weld tabs to front and back sides of legs, drill and thru bolt tabs to lower half after legs are swung back to vertical. Something along those lines if the shortened support will slide into place.

I am feeling much better this morning after giving this issue some thought. I havent decided exactly what I will do as of yet. As stated last night, my thoughts were to cut down middle and place metal brackets with some grade 8 bolts. I want to shy away from welding it permanently, just in case that thing ever has to come out.

On a side note, has anyone ever thought about recreating another dash panel that sat lower that would allow the steering shaft to hang lower, allowing gauges above steering? It was just a thought last night as I was pondering the idea of cutting the support frame. Not sure if gauges would even fit on left or right hand side of the steering shaft. Another concern would be the room available after that shaft is lowered to the drivers legs.

I ended up removing one of the steering column support brackets, I made a new one and narrowed the bracketing so I could get my speedo closer to the 1 o'clock position. Now I can see it thru the steering wheel better.

I mounted my seat directly to the floor even then sliding under the steering wheel takes some getting used to.

I bought a tilt IDIDIT so maybe it will be a little forgiving if I lowered the steering some.

Hello ziggy75, I'm not sure about lowering the steering shaft mount to allow room for gauges directly in front of the steering wheel. More than likely it would cause you to raise the tilt steering wheel to clear your legs and leave it there possibly blocking the view of your gauges, after all the work to modify the stock dash panel. My opinion.
