Steering shaft loose

This morning, I discovered that the end cap of the tube that holds the shaft between the steering wheel and first universal joint, is lose. The “end cap” that the shaft passes thru is loose on the shaft. It also is partially damaged, apparently from some sort of rubbing. Another part of this mystery is that the steering wheel moves about 3/8” toward the driver when I turn it in one direction, and then returns to “normal” when I turn it in the other direction. Guessing that the shafts and two u-joints between the steering wheel and steering box are somehow binding. Anyone have a similar experience or insight into this problem? Thx

I don't know if this is what you're referencing. There is one upper and one lower. I have SP2997. The steering column tube is VW Scirocco. I just sourced 2 from Heritage parts in the UK. There are none available anywhere in the USA. Ebay has them from China.

Which intermediate shaft does your car have? The all black shaft with u-joints or the three piece shaft with the separate alum joints?
