It doesn't appear from the previous "build manual" discussion that there's much information in them, but does anyone have a wiring diagram for these cars, whether from West Coast or just something they've drawn up from experience? I'm sure a lot of us could use one in general, and I am definitely NOT "the electrical guy" that could put a good one together.

Specifically with something I've just noticed though: I'm trying to figure out why someone would have needed to run a 30amp fuse on the headlight switch? A 20amp fuse will blow in mine, and even with the 30amp, the metal base ring gets hotter than Hades (I found out one night pulling the headlight knob out)! Just want to make sure I'm not going to burn something up.

Are you using Halogen head lamps? You can use a relay between your switch and the lamp loads. It definitly sounds like you've got a short somewhere

Unplug all your lights at the lamp fixture, all tail lights and headlights. Get an amp meter remove your headlamp fuse and clip the red on the hot side of the fuse holder and the black on the other connection. Make sure it's on DC AMPS on the highest setting. (higher than 30 AMPS) Turn on your headlamp switch and plug one lamp in at a time and check your meter to see what your amps draw is. When you peg the meter or have a significant increase in amps you've found the circuit where the problem is. With no bulbs in the circuit you should have zero amps when you start plugging in light bulbs.

You can also use an Ohm meter to check from power to ground (disconnect the battery) and see where you have a short with all the bulbs disconnected.

Hey Xack,

Sorry for the delay - I must not have been subscribed to get email notification of messages!

Third owner, West Coast (2005 build). I noticed driving it at night this weekend that my tach (and speedometer, to a lesser extent) go wild when the switch is pulled, making me think the worst electrical interference is right there at the switch itself. I'm hoping to have some time this weekend to start looking at it & try the steps you've mentioned. But yes: a copy of any diagram or whatnot you may have would be most appreciated!

You have a short in the switch or in the circuit connected to one of your headlights. It may be arching somewhere and causing pulses in your main buss. This would cause the guages to "go wild". Bad Ground? You might possibly have an issue with the wiring in your Instrument panel cluster. You can remove the whole instrument panel and check the grounds circuit to see if you have a good ground or if something has come undone or is touching somewhere behind the dash panel.
