Factory heating panel - anyone do something different?

The right side of my "factory" heater / fan panel in the dash broke loose from the dash this past weekend. The heat control valve cable was always too hard to even BEGIN trying using that horizontally-sliding temperature control knob anyway, and in looking at it more, it appears that whole assembly is there simply to hook the control valve cable up to, along with a fan motor to the bottom left fan switch.

So I'm thinking about changing that panel out to a simple panel that would have a more functional choke-type cable pull knob, and then just some type of variable knob for the heater fan. I didn't see any photos posted of such, but has anyone else already done something like this? Any suggestions in general of what would look and/or work best?

I've got a custom set up. I took a Ford Ranger knob set and panel which had to be cut off and modified it to fit the hole in the dash. The switch I hooked to a set of 3 relays which is wired to the heater blower motor. I made a custom heater controller with a small PLC. You may not want to do that. Perhaps it would be better to locate the pull cable under the dash. Most people do that because hooking up the crappy heater controller is unreliable anyway.
