I installed a power steering flow control valve from Jegs Item#555-60791, $19.99. This valve is specifically made for Saginaw pumps used with Mustang II steering racks. It made the steering feel just right. Well worth doing which ever way you decide to go.

I actually got one of these, but I have yet to install it. I'm getting my car running and completed this spring. I'm glad you updated us on the results. I'll put it in after the engine is tuned and never look back.

I installed mine and at driving speed it feels more connected with the road. At stop, parking, etc. it is very stiff. It is bearable but I wish there was a way that it was more proportional. How is your setup?

I have not had that problem at stop or parking. Steering feels just like "normal" power steering at stop and low speed, maybe just a hair light at higher speed, but much better than the original setup. At higher speed feeling a little light may be inherent in these short wheel base cars. Just a guess I'm no suspension expert.

Guys, I have finally had some time and installed the Jegs unit last night and it made a difference. 10 minutes and $50 (including fluid), worth the effort. I like it at cruise speed a lot better. Still light at high speed but better than before.

the kellison manual shows a saginaw. no restriction mentioned. and yes they were twitchy.
this is why i changed their car to the pinto pump. it has the correct pressure to begin with. trust me it works nice.

I just put in a Borgeson kit that reduces the pressure to the rack (http://borgeson.com/instructions/899001). I used 5 shims, meaning the rack s/b seeing 700 PSI, and it still seems too light for my tastes. What's next, pulling the pump, then draining the rack and plugging the ports?

This discussion goes with what I asked yesterday about alignment. I believe more caster will help with the power steering, especially at higher speeds. However, how much is too much? I am thinking +4-5 degrees but have heard up to +7, which I think is too much if you drive in some hard corners. I'm currently at +2 and Pinto/Mustang II specs are only +1 degree. Wondering what others have set up? Mine is still a bit light for me, but better with the pump orifice I installed.

I've been doing a lot of Web surfing to come up with the answer to the caster question, as my car is heading for safety on Friday and they're looking for alignment specs. There are a LOT of Mustang II front ends out there, particularly among the hot rod crowd, and many of them are aftermarket reproductions these days.

From what I've seen, virtually everyone says not to follow the Ford specification. Caster recommendations seem to be in the range of +2 to +6 degrees, with the low end for manual racks and the higher end for power steering.

I don't know what mine is currently set at, but I'm inclined to discuss with the shop and aim for somewhere around +4 degrees.
