Hello

I am the wrench end of a friendship with collector who just got a low mileage WCC '07 460 / manual. Its Blue and white stripes, sidepipes (of course). The rear end was broke when got it at auction, but I have that apart and fixing it. Strangely it was a "open" diff and the spider gears more or less exploded and are now in 8 parts or so. The parts bonking around took out the two gears that mate with the axles, the pin, etc. No worries though as I'm replacing all that with the Ford Racing limited slip and new bearings, races, etc. The ring/pinion was good. I don't think it was driven much after the break, as the lube was not visibly contaminated and shards were not all over. So will clean out the axle tubes, axles, etc. My buddy is a retired Ford mechanic / drag racer so he's going to set it up when we get the parts tomorrow.

The engine sounds like a beast. I can't wait to drive it. I used to drive in snow up north quite a bit so I'm used to limited traction, and I have endurance racing experience. Have to take it easy and learn the car.

The wheels that it came with are 15" repro Hallibrands with very wide Goodyear racing grooved tires, with the huge "Goodyear" lettering on the side. They say in big letters "not for street use" so I am not sure how that will go with the inspection. In any case, they are likely not a great street tire for driving around, being so soft.

I have read on the wheel/tire section some different thoughts regarding going +1 or up to +3 or so, as is the modern trend of having a short sidewall and big wheel. Definitely a different look. Complicating it that the 15" size is likely a lot harder to find good tires. Also, the tires appear to rub on the front A arm back side.

A fuel smell in the trunk. Read some complaints about the fuel neck hose.

The vac advance is not hooked up.

The AC compressor oddly is mounted to the frame, while the engine is mounted using rubber mounts. Its a short distance, and the pulley is a deeper than avg one, but wondering what that is about.

We don't have a top. Is it something that fits well enough to bother with? We in Houston area get some heavy rains on occasion.

Owner would like a sidepipe guard to keep him and wife from burning legs, WCC do they still sell them or is there another source? Likely a stock item for Cobra's.

I realize I need to check the FAQ or something, but finding myself babbling at least in virtual format.

Check to see if you have a plastic fuel tank with a big plate attached with a lot of screws. If it is, do yourself a favor and get a new tank or fuel cell. This is one of the items which was a re-design after Vern could not locate parts to fit. I used a custom design aluminum tank that holds 20 gallons. It's not a "fuel cell". I am never going to drag race. I need a big tank for cruising. No leaks, no smell.

Regarding the top, the size of the cockpit is larger than a standard cobra. Getting a top for a standard size car won't fit. There is a thread on here with good info on that.

Dirkdaddy, welcome and you should enjoy the car. Regarding fuel smell, if it is already an aluminum tank I had a ball cock valve on the outlet and the threads in the tank were not tapered so it would not seal. JBWeld and a new tap took care of it. It dripped just enough to notice and any small drip will smell like hell. I dont race either and it s an 18 gallon tank. No more fuel smell. All of his rear ends were open from the "factory". Passenger side wheel will be the one that spins. You have three choices, live with it, run that tire a few pounds lighter or install a LSD. Check your mounts, brakes, bushings, welds...give it a good once over.

Thanks for advice. I have my new Ford racing LSD. Very surprised WCC would not have one stock, but then again it would have to be purchased, installed and setup, which adds to cost/time. If they are the same, FYI its a 28 spline variety. What car are the brakes from, and do people upgrade them? The owner is asking about upgraded brakes, but I explained that the 15" wheel limits any of the "bling" brakes.

What tires/wheels are you guys running?

Regarding the AC compressor, Vern mounted it on the frame for some reason, he claims it wont fit otherwise. It works fine except if you dont tighten it good it will slip when you torque the motor. The motor rolls to that side and the belt slips. Regarding brakes, they are Granada brakes and they need to be changed. I run 17" wheels and 12" wildwoods. the stock Granada caliper brackets wont work because the calipers are heavy truck calipers and dont line up with stock bracket. Threw it all away and started over. Left the back brakes as is, the plate is bolted, no welds and I have the proportional valve to the front.

Thanks BobCobra. Do you happen to know the backspacing and offset, width of your rims? I could use the existing measurements but I did notice the inside of front tires were rubbing the A arms in the back on extreme turns. Or is that because we need to weld a stop for turning?
