What kind of air cleaners are people running? My oval air cleaner ("AC") is sandwiched between the distributor and hood, making contact with both when the hood is closed. The AC follows the angle of the engine, meaning it's higher at the front, with lots of clearance at the back.

My plan is to replace the current carb spacer with a 5 degree wedge plate (http://bit.ly/1un3kVs) to lower the front of the carb and AC for clearance. I am also going to replace the air cleaner but trying to decide between a 14" diameter, 3" high K&N filter with a 1 3/8" drop base (http://bit.ly/1un3xrF) or a 9" diameter, 2 1/2" high K&N filter with an X-Stream top plate (http://bit.ly/1un3z2S).

The 14" filter will provide more filtering / breathing area, but I'm not sure about hood clearance, even with the wedge plate - though the curve on top seems like it will work. Currently I have 2 3/4" clearance from the filter mounting surface to the hood.

Thoughts?

For lack of better knowledge I have a Cobra air filter holder. It's actually the wrong one since it's from the Ford Mustang Cobra series, not AC or Shelby Cobras. I'm using a carburetor heat resisting spacer between my Edelbrock Performer intake for stock heads. The sheet metal on the bottom of the air filter holder was slightly bigger than the diameter of the carburetor and does not provide a seal. I used some weatherstripping to seal the carb to the air filter holder. There was a plastic spacer included to raise the business but that was too much. I have about 1/4" between the front of the air filter holder. The "oval" fit's into the hood scoop very well. My issues were not with hood clearance, but with distributor cap due to the length from front to rear.

Cycleguy, yours was probably set up like mine, the front of the filter housing sat on the distributor cap. It is heavy and not a good installation. I was a little surprised that was determined to be a good install. I just made a new base and offset it so it sits on the carb a little off center to the back. Plenty of room in the scoop if you keep it as forward as possible. As far as air flow I have tuned it with and without the air filter and there is minimal difference in the AFR so it is getting good air flow. Keep it simple. you cant really notice mine sits to the back a little. I did NOT want the front resting on the distributor.

BOBOCobra: Thanks for your thoughts, but when I checked out your idea I realized it won't work on my car. I need to move the AC back 3" to clear the distributor which, coincidentally, is the distance from the rear of the AC to the firewall. Even if I could get away with moving it back only 2 3/4" (which MIGHT clear the distributor, the back edge of the hood drops 2" and that would contact the top of the AC. Was certainly worth looking at, though.
