I have spent 10 years after getting a new motor fighting overheating. Many of you had some great ideas and I tried to implement most of them to solve my heating issues but to no avail. I took my car back to the builder, who I must say has shown remarkable integrity in trying to solve these issues with little or no charge to me.

I finally threw in the towel yesterday in a 3 hour discussion with him. He is going to pull and tear apart the entire engine at no cost and see if perhaps the cylinder walls are too thin after we bored the block so many years ago. He is then going to provide a new seasoned block at no charge and rebuild the motor with as many of the original parts as can be used. I will only pay for the new parts that are above and beyond what were put into the original motor.

I can only hope that this will solve the issues I have had but there are no guarantees where Cobras are concerned. I am also giving up the TWM stacks, manifold and FAST controller and going to put in dual fours. I am going back to simple.

Wish me luck and if anyone has a desire to install stacks and EFI.....let me know.

I'm sorry to hear that you've hade trouble with your engine. I wish you well with your new power plant. And I agree, Simple is better for a lot of things.

What I've learned...
1. Get rid of air pockets. Top of the block air bleed is important for being able to purge air at any time.

2. A good water pump. and the pulley to match the design. That does not need to be expensive, just installed correctly.
3. Air flow, air flow air flow. You can't spend too much on a good SHROUDED fan provided it's installed correctly. Just get all the air from the fan through the radiator.

All this should sound like common sense and you probably have heard it before. From what I've found it’s the summation of a lot of little things. Not (necessarily) one BIG thing.

An update on the rebirth of my motor....

Heads were removed and found liquid oil on the combustion side of the valves.. Looks like the guides are shot also.....

Still waiting to get into the meat of things......Stay tuned

Is your build stock or did you have aluminum heads?

If your heads are not set up for unleaded, by chance did you run regular uleaded (with no lead substitute). I have not run my engine very much beyond cam break-in. I was wondering how long it would take to start seeing problems and what kind with regard to no-lead gas with the old build.

Heads were redone at my last rebuild 10 years ago. I have only ever run 91 unleaded in my car.

I must agree with Xack, I have a 427 SO and overheating was a bit of an issue. From overboiling tha gas to poor air flow. I don't have to tell you that we are sitting on an engine hooked to a tranny and no matter what we do we will fell the heat. That said. if your engine runs around 180 F on open road count your blessings. The next question is what type of radiator you have, what kind of coolant mixture are you using and are you adding water wetter this will bring down the temp?

Lastly, have you consider checking (if not done so yet) your thermostat? that is always the source of overheating problems.

I did many things to mine and finally I have the heat issue under some control. including covering my gas lines with anti heat wrapping material.

We have gone so many directions with this old motor. We replaced the stock WCC radiator with a larger Griffin radiator, shrouded wry well and dual fans. We replaced the thermostat 4 times without changing anything.

New note....when we pulled off the aluminum Cobra Jet heads, the intake gasket had a disruption that was allowing hot, compressed gasses get pumped into the water pocket causing some steam to develop and slowly cause it to heat. Once started, it would just continue until the temp reached 240+. It's appeared to be the long standing cause of the heating issue.

We just got the new SVO block and the new Jon Kaase P-51 heads. We will be building a 545 ci motor with dual quads.

And so another chapter begins.

Thats the spirit Mike:
These toys are a constant mystery. I have a small puff of blue smoke coming out of my lright side pipe, I change the valve seats, change to VR1 50 Racing oil, tested the compression (no problems here) no wet plugs on either side so I let go. I was told that maybe, just maybe the intake manifold gasket has a problem, I have not even consider going there, the second I do I now that somethinjg else will pop upso for now I can live with the blue puff of smoke from 1st to 2nd gear.

Now I am in the process of taking off the side pipes, and hence the headers to change the exhaust header gasket, for it has a small leak and I hate the extra noise. While doing that I might upgrade my side pipes to Fireflys but that will require sending mine to Ron Roberts and building a set for me. I also need to install an electric fuel pump to reduce any over boiling of gas during the summer and emptying my carb bowls, hence giving me trouble at starting a hot car.

It is always something as you know. My builder wants to put on a mechanical fuel pump. Ever hadmanynexperience with one?
