I'd like to replace the old Ford steering column in my car and replace it with something that looks better, has an operational horn button on the steering wheel, etc. My plan would be to seek a column that moves my steering wheel a bit closer to the dash, has tilt, relocate the ignition switch to the dash and install an electronic immobilizer at the same time.

A quick scan seems to indicate most of these columns use GM wiring - any issues "mapping" it to the wiring already in the car?

Has anyone else done this? Any hints or suggestions on which column(s) to look at or how to make the whole process as simple as possible?

My column is an IDIDIT. You just need to map your connections. You will need to make a bracket to fit your car. I had one machined from aluminum stock to clamp the column. And I bought one which worked on the lower mount point. Moving your steering wheel toward the dash is certainly doable, but a tilt column is going to move your wheel out from the dash. The question is do you want to give up needed knee room. I have my wheel out far enough so that it does not cause knee-wheel collisions when shifting and braking. In an emergency you don't want to be fighting your car to stop or when shifting. If your legs are shorter than 34" you may not have a problem here. Also you can get a smaller wheel. Before I purchased my WCC, I sat in a replica and I could not brake or shift. Also, My left knee was pinched into the door by the steering wheel. My setup is custom designed around my legs and knees and it works pretty good. Different seats and column-wheel position is key.

I had to get an adapter to use my existing steering wheel, as well as an adapter to go from 3/4"-36 splines to 3/4" DD. All went well

I found the steering would 'stick' when it got hot. It was good at a cold start or when running at highway speeds, but cruising around town with minimal airflow through the engine compartment would result in the steering wanting to stay in one place, needing a bit more effort to get it moving. Probably not a big issue or a safety hazard, but more an irritant for me.

I tracked down the issue to the Delrin bushing at the bottom of the column. Apparently Delrin has a maximum working temperature of 180°F, and I have no doubt the proximity to the header primary tubes increased the temperature beyond that whenever the engine was warmed up and running in stop and go traffic, etc.

The simple fix was to replace the Delrin bushing with a proper bearing. Easier said than done, as the column was swaged at the end to grab the groove in the bushing. After some effort I was able to remove it. I replaced it with a 6203-3/4-2RS ball bearing. While the OD of the bearing is smaller than the ID of the column, I used some short sections of heat shrink tubing to increase the size and make it a snug fit in the column. The end result is a massive improvement that completely eliminated the stickiness.

Hint: Delrin can be drilled and tapped. Anyone doing this should drill and tap the bushing, thread in a 5/16" NC bold and use a slide hammer or similar to remove it.

The only issue I now have is the wiper switch. I have a universal wiper switch that works very well, though the Park function appears incompatible with the wiper motor I have. Each time I tried to use it the result was an immediately blown fuse. Right now, I'm manually parking the wiper blades by turning the switch off at the right time. No big deal, but if there was an aftermarket switch compatible with my Ford wiper motor, I'd definitely make the switch (pun intended).

BTW, I think I've found a switch from '80s era Ford pickups that may work. Ford p/n E7TZ-17A553-B or Standard Motor Products DS576. Does anyone know if Ford retained the same internal circuitry (particularly the Park function) on their wiper motors over the years, especially through the '70s and '80s?
