Awesome. It was 100 ambient yesterday and I could not get it over 200 in heavy traffic. It actually cools down at stop lights. Imagine that! Only problem is at idle speed, at night with lights on, stereo and both fans running, electric fuel pump and MSD, I am tapped out on alternator, just need to keep it above 60 MPH! In the morning it was 68 ambient and I was running at 175 on the freeway.

Not to high jack the thread, but I changed my alternator last year to a 350 amp single wire unit and I have noticed that if my temp goes to 200 degrees or more despite that my fans immediately kick on the belt of my alt screeches. Not until it goes down to 180 degrees it quiets down. I used belt dressing but I was told that it could be too aggressive that the belt can crawl off. My belt has the inner teeth and fits perfectly in the pulley. Any thoughts?

Your alternator should only drag if you are using the amps it can produce. It sounds like you've got bearing issues or there is some misalignment which causes the Alt to drag mechanically. Or, you've got a short in the system someplace that's causing your alt to peak the amps. If so, why are you pushing so many amps? What other big amp items are you running on your car? Big woofers? Seat heaters? Fans? You can unhook these temporarily and see if your problem disapears. The load on an alt is going to be making amps. If you remove the load, it should spin freely. If it does not spin freely at minimum load, it's a bad alternator.

+1 on what Xack said. Belt is screeching because of load, not temp. Load is coming from somewhere and 350 amps is a HUGE draw. what is fan amp draw? It sounds like it is fan related. I would start there and if related to fan/temp issue disconnect fans and run your temp up past 200. Report back.

Hmm.. Water Pump bearings are binding when the engine gets hot. That's causing the belts to screeeee... When it cools down, the binding eases. What do you think about that hypothesis?

Could be. Take the easy way first. If fans have electrical short or other problem it will stop if you isolate fans. If it persists then look elsewhere, WP, Alternator, ... I like to eliminate obvious before I start draining fluids. I had a weird alternator problem with the stock alternator that drove me crazy until I found it and threw it in the trash.

Basque, The more I think about it the whole 350 amp thing seems strange. What it takes to turn that pulley is going to be high. Just seems like overkill. You need a chain drive to turn that. Did you mistype and it is 150 amp?
