Amazing! I see stuff like that piled in garages in my neighborhood all the time. Unfortunately, they turn out to be 1976 Corvettes with rotted frames worth $4500 and the guy thinks it is a rare classic worth $45000!

I wonder what they paid?

Ronnie Spain knew exactly where the car was. It had been out of the garage a few years ago for a photo op. The owner blew the engine and had started a restoration, and packed things up (and around ) after he stopped making progress. So it's not "lost", just hidden by its owner from view.

Why is Salt Walther's name on the garage-find Ford GT40?

I like this part:

As the story goes, Walther's garage burned down at some point and P/1005 was simply bulldozed over along with the remaining debris, only to be found poking through the mud years later.

Default The yellow one found in Los Angeles suburb was not the buried one

The fireman's GT40 (with Mk. II rear body style tho it was Mk. I) was intact when he bought it from Salt Walther. It was only buried under cardboard boxes in his SF valley garage.
The buried one has a different chassis number and is explored in Jerry Heasley's Barn Find book except Jerry does not go into that a later owner of that car, once dug up, has had a chassis change yet we are still supposed to believe that it is the real car dug up.
I am a little wary of chassis changes, in fact i threw away my Lola T-70 book after I came across at least ten cars with chassis changes. I mean if you can change the chassis, where's the real car. Everything but the chassis , fundamentally, is just an accessory.
I'd still like to hear what the Fireman paid. He told me but I forgot after nearly 40 years...

I know a little about what you are talking about. Just look at my buddy Collier's Scarab that Morton flipped to avoid an accident. That Scarab was involved in a fire decades ago and had a chassis change. Collier purchased the Scarab from Orosco and then found the original fire damaged chassis. After the wreck over 3.5 years ago the plan was to rebuild the Scarab with the original chassis and destroy the replacement. Not sure what has happened since then. Things like this happen from time to time. Hope those registry guys are taking notes. lol
