Sorry, I should have looked closer at the date of the article!
Someone just sent it to me today and I guess I jumped the gun.
Still a nice find, but not as nice as the pics above!

Rick,

If you would like I can certainly help remove some of that "Junk" for you and store it in my garage

It's not his garage, but a mutual friend named "Fran"

Coincidentally, the black "Targa" is an ERA

I would be happy to have a garage full of that kind of junk. Of course I would be happy to have a garage that large too.

It is/was, now painted like X1 at Sebring '66. Here it is circa 2013 during a stay at the Kress Hilton Resort:

I agree.
Might be a good subject for a new thread...."Why do so many high end / high dollar cars have T/A's fitted?"

Cheers,
Glen

Because of size and availability. They were great tires once (about oh say, 1977!) and the easy availability keeps them in use. Many people are not aware of the limitations and flaws in the BFG T/As so they continue to be purchased for cars that deserve better. On a 3600# 70s muscle car, not a bad tire. On a 2300# rocket not so much...

Those pictures were taken not too long after the car was acquired from the esteemed Peter P. and he had fitted the BFGs.

Mickey Thompsoms and Avons are easy enough to source here in Australia, so I imagine they are easily available on your side of the pond as well.
Both MT and Avon have the 15" sizes well covered (IMO) so it beats me why the owner of a megabuck car would fit lesser quality tyres

Cheers,
Glen

The front sizes required by a GT40 (205-225/60-15) are not available in the MTs so that means a mixed set of tires.

Agreed on the Avon's, best 15's extant. And it amazes me that guys will spend THOUSANDS for 50 more HP but cheap out on spending another $6-700 to actually be able to use it!
