Question GT40 Kits

I am thinking of building a GT 40. Does anybody have any knowledge of the relative merits of the different kits out there. For example the ERA kit starts at 54,900 while the New Zealand kit starts a around 13,900. There seem to be several others between. Any thought s and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

ERA is top notch. The only problem is you have to wait 3 years to get one.

Wh ydon't you come over to our forum:

www.gt40s.com

You'll learn a lot about those kits as well as many more from Roaring Forties, DRB, two new US companies, and others.

hello all
you might try a cavgt. Turn key minus motor and trans is $59,500.00. check out Florida Advanced Vehicals at www.fav-gt40@aol.com or give Bill Andrews at HRE motors at {516} 378 5461. I have own one and went down this road last year. I'm always available to chat about gt40's .

The ERAs are tremendous - I've seen a few of them at various stages of build - including a bare frame last week. Went up to see my 289, the first picture I took was of the bare GT-40 frame. Great engineering built by true craftsmen.

I also suggest that you take a look at CAV. I am one of their reps, and I think you will be impressed with the quality of the materials and workmanship. We only offer turnkey minus or completed vehicles. The price is very competitive. Our only chassis option is a stainless steel monocoque. I think you will find that it is difficult to build any of the top of the line kits cheaper then you can buy our turnkey minus car. We have several cars available throughout the country for test drives, etc.

Check out the US importer website at:
www.cavgt.com

The manufacturer site at:

Super 40,
I have no idea as to which one of the GT40's is the best. What I do know is the Roaring Forties was the Best for me. All of these GT's are fine examples of the essence the original had..
You absolutly must do your homework by making a spread sheet and write down what's important to have in your GT.
CAV makes turnkey minus only but most of the others do kits and turnkey minuses. Personally I think most the turnkeys are competitive. It's going to depend on what options you get .
ERA is far and above the others as a turnkey minus but it's up to you as to whether the extra cost is warranted.

Default GT 40 Selection

Hersh:

Just starting the search, would you care to mention those points that were important to you when selecting your GT ? After the Cobra "experience ", one item for me to review will be the GT in regards to the CT DMV regulations.

Do not intend to build a kit myself or necessarily start with a kit but obtain a turnkey, or minus, from the dealer.

..................thanks

Don

I was leaning towards the roaring forties kit. The CAV kit looks nice though.

I did first look into gt40nz but again it seems that rf is better than gt40nz for their complete kits. I like RF's dealer network with Gordon and Hershal as a distributor. Its bad that it needs modifications for a ZF transmission which is essential to 351 strokers. I have never built a car before so it would be a learning process for me.

The 351 and ZF option is available for the CAV. The CAV is only available as a turnkey minus. The overall price for a completed car is very comparable to most high quality kits.

Just a note to say that the author of this thread, Rolf Brunkhorst, bought an RF GT40. he has had the kit for several weeks now and is ebjoying the build with his three sons. I look forward to seeing the finished product.
Congratulations Rolf, you and your boys are doing a great job.

Well I have seen the photo of them building it. I wonder what engine and tranny they are going to put into it.

Cool RF GT40 #80

Yes, its been a while since I made that first post. I took delivery on my RFGT40 back in the middle of September. Since then a lot of aluminum and fiberglass has been worked on. Hershal Byrd and Jerry Jansing spent a weekend helping me fit the body. I'm planning to put a 302 ford configured for high RPM high HP but relatively low torque. I am planing on using an Audi 016 transaxle but am looking at swapping the pinion gear from a Porsche 944 transaxle for taller gear ratios. We have the Audi box apart now and are getting ready to put the LSD in it. I have the Motec fuel injection. I still have a long way to go but hope to be on the road by mid summer 04.

I'm in Mid-Mo and am interested in doing a GT40. Who is RF? I have done 2 Cobras and just bought a turn-key minus. I miss the hands-on. How is the build going? I'm planning on the DVSF in Columbus in June....how far are you from Columbus? I'd like to see your project.

I'll be taking delivery of my MDA GT40 in mid-april. Mark Sibley has been a joy to work with. He used to work for GTD then started his own company. His car was in the latest James Bond movie. He also is making a MK II version as well as a Lola T70. I'm building a MkI version with a 289 and webers. I'll then put it up for sale. I'd like to build a second with a 390 FE and a porsche G50 transaxle in the Mk II body style. Don't see too many of those around.

Default GT40

Well a lot of work and fiberglass dust has gone by but most of the body fitting is done. I'm actually taking the thing apart to get ready to prime it and add the subsystems. Here's an updated pic. Doesn't look much different but it has sucked up the hours.
