Not taking pot shots at the seller's ad, rather a constructive criticism of what the asking price is and what the market may realistically bear. Often, an owner can put a $ value on each item or feature on a car based on the actual $ spent and time put into the machine. We all know this is not real when it comes to selling a used automobile. I, as a potential buyer, will never pay more than $100,000 for a used replica, no matter what make, model or amount of extras are into the car. Now, that's just me and my 2c worth.
I'm looking to acquire another car, and so I'm in the market for it and the first thing I thought of when I saw the ad was that I could build a close-to-perfect SPF GT for a lot less than that.
Why post it on the forum? I thought it may help this seller realize what is real and what's not. I feel bad that he's got that much into the car, or more, and from the feedback here, apparently not recoverable...at least to potential buyers on this forum.

So the next time I see an ad that you post, and in my opinion your pricing is too high, I will make sure I post comments telling any potential buyers that you're out of line.

All in the spirit of being constructive, of course.

Actually, there is nothing wrong with stating that a seller is out of line on pricing - on this site, especially - as the seller is not paying for the post. I'm thinking that whatever is posted here "for sale" is deserving of all Club Member opinions - positive or negative with those opinions helpful to me as a potential buyer.

Ron, Computerworks, recently pointed out that 'comments' not directed specifically to the seller might be deleted from a For Sale ad.

It's an attempt to clean up exactly what happened in THIS thread. There IS something wrong with questioning a sellers price in his Ad. Start a new thread if it bothers you.

Just because it's 'Free' doesn't mean we have the right to knock it. It's Brents site, HE sets the standards.

I would be more inclined to respect the sellers post and reserve negative comment only if solicited. If the item does not sell at the asking price then I think it speaks for itself.

Maybe as a for sale post it should be in the for sale area? I imagine that would cut down on comments (myself included) on the thread. Just a thought.

Then, you must do it by PM or e-mail, if it is in the For Sale Forum...

This was not, so we let the dialog roll.

See what happens?

Not now...a little busy...but later I will split this up and move his listing over to the For Sale forum.

Of course, you're right. The listing was his first post...understandable not to put it in the Cobras For Sale forum...

Well, you shouldn't as it's poor form according to you.

JCOOP,

Cobra de Cappell, wouldn't answer - maybe you will. If you are actually attempting to help the seller, as you pointed out, why not PM them?

Why would you say not recoverable? GT40's are not quick sales regardless of brands. ERA GT40's are simply amazing vehicles and when done right will cost good money. I am sure that given time this car will sell for close to what the seller is asking. There will be a buyer out there.

I guess everyone should go into the Cobras for sale threads and anything not sold within 2 weeks should be editorialized by all us market experts.

This thread may have been posted in the GT40 forum, but it clearly is a for sale thread and should be treated as such.

They are pretty cars, but if history is any indication then the price it sells for with be less than what is in it. But, I don't think any of us are under illusions that we'll make money with these things.

Not to debate this car or prices, but the market has changed quite a bit in the last five years or so. There are many new manufactuer's of GT40s on the market, and no less than three other monocoque designs out and available right now. One of those mono cars is a more exact of a replica than the ERA as it uses a steel roof and many unique special made reproduction parts - if the "exactness" is what you are after - as well as license to be called a GT40 and possible vintage racing creditials. This car can be on the road and running for around $100k.

The other two mono designs are extemely close replicas and sport their own chassis designs with improvements and features geared toward different factions of enthusiasts. One is an aluminum monocoque and the other is a stainless steel monocoque and these can be had and on the road for far less than $100k. And of course there are still many nice space frame cars to be had as well but since the ERA is a monocoque car I didn't throw those in here.

Interesting times these are. Folks have a huge array of GT40s to choose from and the prices are considerably less now than ever before. A great time to be shopping for one!

Ron

Default Public apology

Let this be a forum apology if I riled up a few forum friends with my post. In retrospect, perhaps I should have kept my mouth shut and PM'd the seller. I have bought and sold about 16 collector cars and never hoped to recover what I put into them. All except one sold for a lot less than my perceived value. A big part of my enjoyment out of this hobby is tinkering with what improvements can be made and eventually finding success with that. Most of the time, the installation process goes way beyond what should have been but I love getting under the hood with a wrench. I don't expect to get paid for that.
My lovely bride reminded me of when I posted a car for sale at another forum and someone hijacked the thread saying his friend had a similar car for sale for $3000 less. I was pissed. Although I did not say that here, my statements could have sounded like that. So, I retract my statement and sincerely apologize to the seller, and to anyone offended by my posts. A major part of this hobby for me is making good friends, not enemies.
Cheers!

Ray,

That has happened to me on more than one occasion and I agree, it sucked.

Thanks for the apology.

Hey, if it is a car you enjoy what more could you ask? The money thing, I hope, doesn't enter into this hobby for most of us. Else, we'd all be called fools for pouring money into replicas! Maybe some of the "real" collectors with money to by "real" cars feel that way about us, but hey, I'm happy!

I'm not trying to help the seller, as it's all about me, so I'm helping myself. If that causes a problem for you, PM me with your home address and I'll send my helper bee over to explain it to you. Unfortunately, he's in jail right now, but will be out in a few weeks - something bum rap relating to assault.
