Default Trailering a GT40?

Greetings Folks;

I'm curious to know how you load a GT40 into an enclosed trailer, given how the doors open. I know there are those on this forum that must know.

Do you have to spec out a custom trailer with a side opening door?

Most who have enclosed trailers and GT40's have a tendency to winch them aboard, then tie them down in the usual fashion.

Iv'e seen built in internal ramps to lift the car over the trailer wheels and then an access door at the car's door height. Very clean and you could get under the car w/o lifts. Looked like it worked exceptionally well and would be my solution given the need.

I have a standard 24' X 8' for the cobra and the KAV GT40 will fit also. You must be somewhat of a contortionist to get out. Pull car as far to the passenger side of the trailer as you can and then open the driver door and crawl "yes crawl" out from under the top part of the door and between the door jamb and the edge of door. I trailered it several times and this works, yes not easy, but works.

Since my enclosed didn't have a side door, I had to wiggle out between the top opengine and the door. Fortunately I have a removable steering wheel. I got tired of doing that, so I did what was mentioned earlier in the thread . . . installed a winch. Like is much easier now.

Cobra ingress and egress is a whole lot easier than with the GT40. The tight fit with the GT40 did have an advantage. It made me watch my weight.

You put a good friend in the car with a six-pack and a couple bags of chips. When you arrive at the destination, you open the rear door, wake him up and let him back it out!

Actually, I had my then 11 year old climb in and out of the car when I took P1116 to the GT40 reunion in 1989. He doesn't fit like that anymore...............

Some trailers have doors over the wheelhouse to allow you to open the car door, but the winch thing works well.

I hadn't thought about an off-center load. That wouldn't be an ideal solution, but it is a solution.

The winch-on solution would also present some difficulties both for loading and unloading.

I wonder if it's possible to get Pace to install a side door in an already built trailer without having to sell a kidney on ebay.

Would it be better to winch it in backwards due to the weight primarily in the rear?

I ran into the same problem with my Coupe... getting out and getting in, in the trailer.

My wife, aka, crew chief recommended body butter or vasoline to slip in and out of the vehicle. She wanted to take pictures and now they are posted on www.doyouwanttovomit&makeamess.com.

Please don't comment or ask!

I now have an open trailer and it's the solution.
