Default Carb Noise

The carb I'm using is a Holley. When i rev the engine the carb makes a screaching noise. It sounds exactly like a belt slipping but I've checked thouroughly and it is definetly the carb. Any thoughts on what it might be?

Thanks
Chaplain

Perhaps a vacuum leak at the base gasket. Torque the mounting bolts/nuts to 80 to 100 inch pounds using a criss-cross pattern and see if it helps.

Never heard of that before, I'd double check with an engine scope.

Agreed, [vacuum leak] squirt some wd40 in the areas described above and it should change the sound or stop it for a short time.

do you have the factory manifold and carb on your 429?
is there an EGR valve behind the carb? if so it may have crapped the bed and causing the screeching sound. which is a vacuum leak.....

I've had an Edelbrock carb make a whistling sound because I used a base plate gasket with a single passage for the bores. Switched to a 4-hole gasket (4-hole intake) and it stopped. Slim chance this is your problem but something to check.

Default whistling/shrieking Holley

On my 67' Corvette, the Holley 1850, after about 10 years, would scream so loud you could hear it on the freeway.

Eventually I took the carb apart and used 220 wet/dry paper to sand the flats on the main body...metering block...float bowls...any surface that was supposed to be flat...

Used a milled steel saw table as the base when possible, moved the piece in figure 8's over the sand paper with a little water.

The carb was quiet for several months...eventually the noise returned, but for a while it was quiet and didn't weep gas from every joint.

So, a vacuum leak, why ?..... something is not sealing...you may be able to sand it flat or have it milled....or if the old pot-metal castings are disintegrating....give it up and get newer parts.

Not your imagination, they can make horrendous noise.

Pete

Mine squeals occasionally like a slipping belt when it is cold and I assumed it was the belt. Doesn't do it when it is warmed up. Since I don't have a choke I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. You think it is a vacuum leak? Engine does not perform like it has a vacuum leak.

I've seen some carbs with a squealing noise from airflow going past the butterflies at idle.
