Adjusting the idle

I decided to lower the idle after a nice ride last night and adjusted the idle screw and to my surprise the idle would not go any lower than 1000rpm. I checked the choke and it was wide open. Any ideas?

check the mixture with a vacuum gauge adjust that first, you could also make sure the secondaries aren't open a little at idle hindering the adjustment lower. hard to say more without being there....

The secondaries (on a four corner idle carb only??) have a very small screw accessed from the bottom of the baseplate. It is used to just barely open the secondaries. If they are open a little too much, they alone will support an above average idle speed even if the primaries are completely closed

It's probably what Rick said above but also check your throttle linkage (rod or cable) to be sure there is enough slack in it to allow the throttle to close a little more.

Had that happen on the Stang with a 670SA. Eng off...hold throttle fully open...the red plastic piece on opposite side is holding primary open a little. Dislodge it. It's part of the elect choke but mine isn't hooked up so don't know why this happens.
