Default Toploader speedometer gear

I need to locate a speedometer gear from a four-speed top loader. I am putting it in a new tremec 600 to reverse the speedometer rotation. When I went to my local Ford dealer
they were clueless. Can anyone tell me where I can get this gear or a part number. Second question. Is there a formula to calculate the size gear I need on the speedometer cable. I am using a tremec 600 with .82 overdrive 295 rear tires and 3.23 rear end

You beat me to it! I just talked to David this morning concerning this matter on the toploader he's building for me. He should be the right guy to solve your problem but wait until he's done with my tranny

Default 17 tooth will be ok

I have also a TKO600 with a 295/50-15 tire but a 3.54 rear end.
I am using the 19 tooth gear which is almost perfect, you would probably need one with 17 teeth. Its a white color gear.
The gear is a standard Ford item. I got mine from Standard Transmission.

Regardless - invest $80 in a GPS. Take the car out when you're finished, put the GPS on the dash and compare your actual land speed to whatever the speedo says. Doesn't do any good to tell the Highway Patrol, "the speedometer said I was only going 55 mph!!!" not 85mph.

I asked David Kee about interchanging the gears between the top loader and the tremec. He was not sure if the gear shafts were the same size and compatable. Has anyone actually done this?

I have the same setup and it’s the 17 tooth, white gear. I actually have an extra if you can't find it at your local dealer, but that is where I got mine.

A couple words of caution. First, I'm not sure if you are installing a new drive gear (on your TKO or not. If you are, then scratch what I said above because you need to switch to LH gears. If you are not, then you need to reverse your speedo. I got one from Tri State Motorsports. If your question was about the drive gear, then you need a 7 tooth, LH drive gear. Second, don't forget to order the clip along with the speedo gear. Third, you need gears for a manual and not an automatic. The Ford dealer parts computers don't make this distinction obvious as when I first went to get the part, I got a wine color 17 tooth gear which was wrong.
Try the ERA Manual for more info (p14 and p23)
