Place your bets...having engine dyno'd in about 2 weeks.
I emailed Eric at Performance Engineering to set up a dyno appointment for the end of October. What do you guys predict that the old girl will make?
C5AE-A 390 block, bored to 4.130" bore. Billet cross-bolted main caps. Machine work by KCR. Scat 3.98" crank Scat 6.490" h-beam rods Probe forged pistons. -4cc dish. 11:1 static, 8.27:1 dynamic. KCR Edelbrock Stage 1 cylinder heads. 2.09" I, 1.66" E. Comp 954 springs. Titanium retainers. Erson roller rockers Comp solid roller lifters Comp custom solid roller cam. 248/254, 286/292, .677"/.684" 110/110 (Installed 2 deg retarded) Dove Tunnel Wedge intake with (2) 1" 4-hole spacers (2) Demon Road Demon Jr. 725cfm carbs, vacuum secondaries Edelbrock water pump MSD Pro-Billet distributor MSD Blaster 2 Coil Ford Racing 9mm plug wires Canton 8qt road race pan with Canton windage tray. Fidanza aluminum flywheel Melling high volume oil pump with ARP pump drive Motorcraft 1-wire alternator The heads haven't been flowed. I have no clue on what headers the dyno shop will use. I'll try to find out ASAP. |

I think the heads may be restricting me. I was hoping to get at least 550hp out of her, but the FE forum guys are nodding their heads. Desktop Dyno and Engine Analyzer Pro both say about 580hp. |
I really don't think 550 is a stretch, but 500 would be a low guess. I'll bet you will be between 550 and 500. You have chosen a nice cam and Keith does great work on the heads. Did he give you the head flow numbers? That will really make your desktop dyno accurate.

I don't have Stage 1 flow numbers, so I used the out of the box numbers. 270/200 @ .600".
Cracker, I'd be happy with that...hope you're right. All of the guys on the FE forum are saying 480-500. |
Are you talking about a chassis dyno or engine dyno? Best rule of thumb is to expect less than you think.

Eric just dyno'd my engine couple weeks ago, on his chassis dyno.
Stock stroke 427, 0.017 over, maybe 429 ci, HiRiser heads, original single four intake, original holley 780 vacuum secondary lemans carb, 10.5 CR, comps solid roller cam. I got peak rwtorque 488 @ 3800 rpms, peak rwhp 454 @5900 rpm's and still climbing. He told me with cobra's, on his dyno's, theres about an 18 - 22 % loss from the engine stand to chassis dyno. Using 20% loss, my engine should have corresponding numbers of peak torque 610, and peak hp 568. We'll see if your dual 4 bbls and MR heads work better. |
What's your cam specs? Were the heads touched?

I'm going to take a wild guess of 465 HP. I actually hope you break the 500 mark but my gut tells me lower.

My 425ci small block with Edelbrock heads, a very mild hydraulic roller cam, and a Vic Jr. intake made 484hp. So if this engine with the same cubic inches, 20 degrees more duration, .140" more lift with a more aggressive lobe, more intake and more carb, a 1/2 point more compression, lighter valvetrain, and a tad bit more head flow makes less horsepower, I'm leaving it at the dyno shop.

The basis for my HIGH guess was my original build by Garry Grimes here in Atlanta. It was a 427, stock stroke, .005 over standard bore, solid lifters, and fairly radical cam. The result was 543 hp and 500 tq. but I had always wanted to move up to a solid roller that in theory should have added about 30-35 hp to the package. The heads were virtually mildly ported Edels - nothing fancy.

I'll go 520 HP with a +- of 40 HP.
I hope you get 600+, but you never can tell what the turn of a wrench or twist of a screwdriver will do. |
600 is not possible with my heads....if I wanna get that high, I'll have to have them massaged.
I think going by the rule of thumb that you can usually get hp = 2*cfm and if my heads flow 270, then 540-550 may be the cap on this one. |
One thing to remember with Eric is that from what he told me, he generally doen't like to run (dyno) customer engines above 6000 rpms, as when they blow up, he doesn't want to be responsible for engine damage, which is why he didn't dyno my engine or the Roush engines past 5900, so my true peak and the Roush paek HP may be higher than shown by his dyno, as he did not take the engines up to the point where the HP had peaked.

Well that may be a problem, because mine should peak at 6300-6400.
Somehow a rod slinging out at 5900 rpm seems like it would do just as much damage as one coming out at 6300. Shoot, he's not responsible for someone else's build....I say dial her up and if she comes apart, she comes apart. |
