Default Thank you Keith Craft!

I just wanted to publically thank you for the engine you built for my car. I still can’t believe how docile the engine, especially when the cam has such a high lift and long duration. A great running engine that can be driven normally, slowly and yet has more power than I could ever use (by my request). It is well built and impressive. Thanks for all of the feedback during the build process and for following up on questions after delivery.

First of all.. What engine did Keith build for you.

Secondly, Kieth Kraft is the one of the best individuals I have ever worked with and I had nothing but a postive experiance and a great running engine.

Keith is one of the premier builders in our industry. You couldnt' find nicer folks than he and Shelly. Both truely care about their customers and what they put their name on for their customers. Keith has done some things for me and I have never been disappointed.

I just peaked back in. it's like Iceberg's, a Shelby aluminum FE, but has a 4.375 bore and stroke, so it has a few more cubes. .. . I think the 482 is a 4.275 bore and stroke, right?

So you're telling me you don't know the size of your...................engine.

A 4.375" bore AND stroke would be a 527 baby. That's a biggins.

A 482 is 4.25" bore AND stroke.

Of course, if I'm wrong, then my esteemed colleagues here at Club Cobra will correct me. I'm 100% sure of that.

Ah yes, maybe I should have went with the big bore CSX block.

It acually calculates to be 526.16 c.i., but most call it 527...I guess in comparison to 427? I call it a 526.

I have one...and love it. Rediculous amount of torque...and when you hear it, there's no doubt it's a big block.

The first time I heard it run was on the engine dyno at Performance Engineering. Totally intimidating!

I remember asking Eric after he shutoff the engine: "Do you think maybe I've overdone it?"

His reply: "I've built a lot of engines, but I can't remember anyone coming back and asking if I can de-tune it a little."

Oh, I know the size of my enigne. I wasn't 100% sure of the 482 bore and stroke without looking it up. Mine is a 527 as much as the 427 is a "427". So it is 526.xxx, 527 sounds cooler. But I did request more low end torque and less "revvy" probably did not not need to, but I didn't know. So we went with dual plane intake a Holley 950 carb (HP4150), hydraulic lifters, "milder" cam then it could have been and we got just short of 700 HP, 683 HP and 667 ft-lbs of torque (682.5 and 666.9) The torque number seems approriate for a Cobra and scary at the same time. . . . does 666 ft-lbs make it a "bad" car?

Holy crap that is a lot.. My 615hp is such a beast and I have to be very respectful of it.. Not that I am complaining..

To mention Keith's quality, my engine is now over 3 years old and starts very easily. It has not lost power and has not required any type of over haul and I do quite few autocross events every year. It even leaks less oil than when new. When I say leak I mean a very very small amount of oil. Some oil leak should be expected from an FE or it is not an actual FE. It does not bother me a bit and makes it more original.

Keith makes the best engines in my book and I smile every time I start her up.

The big bore option, if I remember correctly, was an extra $500, so after spending what I spent on the engine (let alone the car), the extra $500 would have been a rounding error in the big scheme of things.

I chose the 482 because I felt warm and fuzzy about having an extra 0.125" around those cylinders and the aluminum block. Aluminum expands and dissipates heat enough already and I was just a little nervous with boring the block out bigger.

nothing wrong with that decision. I don't think you can feel any difference between the two anyway, since none of us can get it to the ground anyway. . . .The Kirkhams prefer the 482 because it revs faster. (shorter stroke) I like the 527 because it's cool sounding, an even 100 from 427. . .silly I know. . ..

Just a few years ago, I had a 540 built for my '66 Corvette Convertible, so a 482 sounded a little puny to me. Still does.

527 does sound better. When someone asks, "Does it have a 427 in it?", you can say "No, a 527" and sound like a smart a$$ and not be lying.

Intersting bit of trivia found on the wonderful Internet:

"The upper limit in NASCAR was 7 litres which is 427 cubic inches. Interestingly enough, when you do the geometry Ford's 427 actually worked out to 425 cubic inches. But Ford would NEVER advertise that fact, which would put them below the Chevy (with a true 427 cubic inches) on the racing pages and advertising."

Based on that, I guess I should stop calling mine a 526 and start calling it a 527 so I can stand on the top row with the big boys!
