Default Ignition / Tachometer wiring

I'm using a Mallory 6al ignition control module and an MSD magnetic trigger distrubutor.

Tom's wiring diagram for the tachmeter (follow the link in the gauge advertisement) indicates the yellow wire from the ignition module should connect to the yellow wire from the back of the tach.

My tach has a yellow with a green stripe that connects to a yellow wire in the wiring harness which I can't follow without invading the harness in some fashion.

Does the tach receive its signal from some other source? I don't want to splice into the harness unless I absolutely have too.

I am running the wires from the ignition module to the coil under the dash and through the firewall on the driver's side - I have to extend the wires either way. I am running the distributor wires through the firewall on the passenger side (no extension necessary).

Any suggestions for the power wires? I am planning on attaching the positive to the 50 amp power distribution block right next to the fuse box and grounding the other wire. The instructions say attach directly to the battery terminals. Some have suggested attaching the positive wire to the battery side of the starter solenoid - that makes sense, but it is more of a job to route the wires.

Foghorn -

The MSD box needs good strong battery power to produce the spark it does.

So if you can, it is a good idea to hook the heavy gauge red power wire directly to the battery positive starter solenoid lug.

If I am feeling extra cautious, I will put in a 50A maxi fuse between that connection and the solenoid lug and solder the terminals before attaching them to the blocks/terminals.

The smaller red wire lead can be attached to the I' terminal of the starter solenoid as it is only a switched 12V for triggering the box ( read 'no-amperage )
This may be a pink-wire depending on config, and is fused from the harness.

Depending on what KMP you have you could be able to tone out ( trace ) the tach wire.

it is yellow as it leaves the K' gauges,

http://www.thomaskirkham.com/4inchinstructions_2_.pdf

-- but it may change color along the way to a purple wire ( if it is the KWIK-WIRE harness. --

http://www.kwikwire.com/DocDownloads...ion%20Book.pdf

---)

if that it the case, that purple wire should attach to the white or gray lead -- or even plug into the side of your MSD box ( refer to instructions )

As for the ground wire I like to make sure it is connected to the same ground log that is also attached to the engine ground lug.

without knowing for sure ,IE; seeing the con-fig --this is the best ideas i can offer.

Steve,

thanks for the help.

I arrived at the same solution - I terminated the 12 ga red power wire with a ring terminal and attached it to the fused side of the Kwik Wire harness power wire (10 ga.), which attaches to the battery side of the starter solenoid. The 10 ga. wire should be able to handle the extra 6 amps that the ignition box will pull at WOT and 6k RPMs.

Thanks for the gouge that the tach wire changes color in the harness.....I think I remember Jeremy mentioning that on the phone.

I have spark (at the right time, too!) and the engine turns over with the key....not much more to go!
