I had a Vega GT...stock motor lasted 10,000 miles. Sleeved the block, added a cam, sidedraft and some headers and won 4 years of SCCA autocross regionals. Sold it with 80K+ miles with nary any oil being used between changes. Go figure.
Course, the rest of the car fell apart around it.
Porsche took GM's idea and built the 928 motor...did a better job and those motors did quite well over time...unsleeved.

Whether you feel any difference between the iron and aluminum blocks depends upon the type of driving you do. I originally had a 428, but switched it out for an aluminum 427 stroker. My driving is limited to the street and I can honestly say that I really don't notice any real difference in handling or performance- maybe if I were putting in on a track, I would notice a difference, but on the street there really is no discernable difference at all. But the benefits of going with a new block cannot be overlooked. JMHO.

I agree with Chaplin. Also, I still say I would run with what you already have. Unless money is no object & you really want a CSX block. IMO, I don't see much resale benefit & no street benefit to an aluminum block. (And I have had both). If you are building an all out track monster, then go for aluminum. What's wrong with an Iron block in the Ironman car?

All good information and advice. If you had a 427 block not the 428 I would say keep that. It would be a regret to put the 428 in that is for sure- even if it were free and you just lost all your money to "Hope & Change". Go 427- it is the soul of the car! I have all iron 427 S/O but I have less than 5K in the damn thing and all I need. But when Kirkham get the all the bad guys out of congres and they finish the billet 427 block that is what it will have. If I bought new I would go all aluminum. Good luck with the build.
Is it going to be your car or an investment for resale?

WHAT??........ He said he had a 462 stroker kit so he's building a stroker. What difference does it make if he starts with a 427 or 428 block? It's a 462 stroker FE. Put cross bolt mains in it & you're all set.

Entertaining thread.............
Some of the information is even correct.
Then there's Ernie
Only 1 of these engines cost over $25,000. Dry sump oiling & efi can do that.

Mike,
Despite the cast of characters, you really should spend some time here-it can be beneficial to your business-as Barry, Keith and Brent have found out. So should Tom Lucas and George. You could straighten out a lot of BS about Shelby blocks and heads-since you
R & D'd them.
My Shelby heads are still great and going strong. -Thanks for a great job.

What BS would that be Chas? The issues, procedures and requirements are well known and well documented for a Shelby alloy build.
We could argue about dollar number till the cows come home. But I still say the majority of folks going with a Shelby alloy motor will be pushing $25K, or better, by the time they pay for shipping, installation, final tuning and accessories.

Yes, we could argue forever and you're still keeping the argument going.
You went from ALL CSX block owners spending more than "X" to a majority.
Ernie, now you're adding shipping, installation final tuning and accessories? Where do you stop? Tires and alignment? Installation of the headers and exhaust? The installation of carpet? How about the cupholder and car cover? I must be over $25,000 now, right?
The KC engine advertised with the CSX block is $19,300 with dyno tune. Shipping is probably another $500 I would guess. Holy cow. I know you want one.

The BS I refer to Ernie, is NOT anything to do with your cost discussions in this thread. I want no part of cost related issues.
I'm asking Mike to share his inside knowledge of the parts-their designs, strengths, weaknesses, power capabilities, machining and assembly procedures-in short all the TECHNICAL side of the parts. There's been a lot of misinformation over the years here.
Barry and Keith don't have all day to post info about these things but if more guys were here (Tom, George, Mike, Draille, Rob McQ, Bogoshian) a broader base of correct info would benefit us all. Even Rick could shed a lot of light having built 2 blocks, but he doesn't have all day for that either.
I didn't include Jim Dove, who is a nice man but I think his reputation here is too damaged to gain credibility.

Headers and sidepipes, good call.
The only BS on this thread is the supposition you can have a running, installed ready to go shut the hood and done Shelby alloy for under $20K. Uh huh, thats a fools dream.

You changed the rules of the game right in middle of the game. From cost to build to fully dressed and completely installed. You also went from $30K to $25K. You're all over the map.
The NOS sideoiler is $4,500. A Shelby block may be $6K with studs. I, ME, MYSELF, would still take the aluminum Shelby block every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Less than $20K delivered to your door Ernie. Take out the plastic. Operators are standing by to take your order. Call now!

Well the bore size of the 428 does limit the size of intake valves. Note that the Shelby KC is offering comes with the big valves, 2.19 I believe they were. That won't clear a 428 bore.
