Default Ironman Cobra Build Thread

Well, the time has come to start building the Ironman Cobra. This thread will most likely start off a little slow, but should pick up pace around mid August after i complete another car.

Engine: I have made my final decision on the engine. I am going with an all aluminum Shelby 427FE/ 482 stroker. Ive always wanted one and i dont want to have any regrets when the build is complete. After all, what is another couple of grand when you look at the total amount that will realistically be invested into this car.

Suspension: I am going with new kirkham suspension components.

The ron francis wiring and Smith gauges have arrived. Ill post pictures as soon as i start making some good progress. Thanks for all the help thus far!

I finally started.

I'm not sure why there are so many holes in the aluminum firewall panel.

Ron Francis Fuse Panel

The dash vinyl is going to need a little touch up work, but it is still useable.

Looking good. Holes in the firewall are all components on small ones, bigger ones are for grommets to take tubes and cables. Starting on the passenger side you have starter solenoid, puke tank holes, 2 upper center are tubes to mechanical guages, lower center is wiring harness, lower speedometer cable, upper regulator screws, lower wiring, upper relay, lower fuse panel, drivers side is wiper tube and fresh air cable.

Very cool!
What happened to the other smashed car? Did you buy that one also?

-Thanks, that helps a lot! Where is the best place to purchase the puke tank for the firewall?

-The crushed car was purchased by someone else at the auction. They were trying really hard to get me to buy it as well at mecum, but i dont have any room for a smashed car, even if it does come with a cool story.

Why use a Puke tank? Are you going for originality? The Kirkham's have one available

Yes, i would like for it to look original and i assume that it needs a puke tank somewhere. Any other options on where to purchase a tank. Nothing against the kirkham tank, im sure it is a wonderful piece, but i would prefer something without a logo.
Thanks

Kirkham made me one for my CSX without a logo and it was beautiful for a great price. (polished was a bit more but worth it!

if you're talking about the oil puke tank, the Kirkham tank has no logo. But it sounds like your talking about the coolant tank in front of the engine. The Kirkham tank is very nice, but does have their logo. These guys supply a stainless steel version of the original tank that can be powdercoated or painted black to look original or they also have the brass one like the originals:

I was just confused and did not put much thought into the tank. I actually was referring to the oil puke tank on the firewall, but simply did not realize that it was an oil puke tank. Is it a good idea to have one or just something else to look pretty in the engine compartment? Ive never heard of an engine having an oil puke tank.

The puke tank was an attempt to catch any vapors that condensed as oil and drop them from the bottom of the puke tank back into the oil pan instead of on the track. They had a draft tube that came from the top of the puke tank and out to the track for the vapors. If you ask the old guys they will remember an oil slick running down the centre of the lanes as alot of road cars used a draft tube before the days of EGR's and other more environmentally friendly options.

Mickmate makes one that is just like the originals (he makes it from the original parts just like Shelby did back in the day). I have one, nice piece.
