Default Rear End Leak

I have one of Tom's Motorsports steel rear end covers for my Jag rear end that was modified and included a breather and hose. I mounted the breather high in the left rear fender well and had not had any leaking or weeping from the breather. I pulled the tires to do my annual visual check and noticed the entire wheel well had a coating of gear oil and the breather was wet. The hose is around four feet long with a 3/4" diameter and I have a hard time believing that I'm pushing that much oil out of the rear end. The modified cover has a splash guard so that should not be an issue. I still need to check the fluid level, but has anyone had trouble like this?

Thanks,

Jason

I would definately check your fluid level to start with. It sounds to me like your breather hose is possibly too long. I know that doesnt make sense but hear me out.

Gear lube is thick and heavy. It is also designed to cling things very well....it especialy likes to cling to rubber. Over time with a little mist coming through the hose you could have coated the inside of the hose pretty well with lube. After that happens it only going to amplify any misting during normal breathing of the rear end. A shorter, larger diameter hose might help.

how is the baffle set up? If it is set up in a way that it will cathc and hold any lube at all your going to have a problem. There is a severe amount of lube being thrown around in there while your driving you would be surprised where it can go and get caught.

Just my thoughts.

Default Do you have inside or outside brakes?

Z-linkCobra Gene I have the same problem from racing. I started with a stock cover and breather tube. I blew oil all over the car of the car. I tryed a long hose with the same problem. I upped the power to the rearend and went to an LWP rear cover that supports the carrier caps. I went to a shorter hose and a catch can with a small breather on top. This stopped the problem of oil all around the rear of the car. The real problem is ALOT of heat in the back of the car from the engine going down the tunnel and the rear inboard brakes. Alot of dead air that gets real hot. i also have a fire proof blanet for the tunnel of the car. This doesn't help either. Cobra restorers sells ducts for the front and rear brakes that help scoop the air up and push out the hot air. A couple of guys use blower fans like Nascar. I tryed synthetic oil and made no real differents. boaters world sells 3" and 4" bildge fans that work well. Have to watch for too much heat and wire relays for them. Need a good charging system also. Rick L.

Well I read his post 3 times and for some reason kept seeing his hose diameter as 1/4 not 3/4...lol. If he followed my advice he would have a 1 1/2 hose on there..lol. 3/4 hose is fine and Rick is right on when he talks about a catch can. On the circle track cars we dont run a catch can but we also dont have the heat build up like your talking about. I never thought the heat build up...but I would think it would make a difference. I would look at the baffle design and make sure its not letting lube pool anywhere. He might need to go to a catch can set up.
