This is my favorite photo. There are 6 tubes that run from the chassis to the cowl tube. They all come in at different angles and intersect the cowl tube at different points. CAD lined everything up perfectly.

The two outside tubes appear to not quite line up, but that is a photo problem. The cowl tube is not straight--it arcs through all 6 of these tubes. When we placed the cowl tube on it was perfect.

Work of art.

:D I love it when a plan comes together. Kind of puts a smile on your face.:)

Beautiful and inspiring work as usual. But even for you guys at Kirkham, isn't this a little over the top, or was it easier to set up the alignment jigs in cad and transfer them to CNC to produce accurately than a traditional jig?

David Kirkham 07-27-2015 08:08 PM

I was tired of traditional jigs and the inaccuracy. I wanted it right. Billet is what we do best.

We drew the entire car in CAD and then made the fixture. It's stunning in real life.

Oh no. Now you're going to ruin the Cobra legacy. Up to now no two Cobras were the same. With this they will be, well, er, (repeatable, reproducible, you get it)? :)

David Kirkham 07-27-2015 08:40 PM

I set out with a goal to have the bonnet, hatch, and doors all interchangeable.

There are very few of us left in the world who can actually make a car by hand. The labor is unreal in a Coupe. We couldn't have any reasonable volume without very good tooling.

Quite stunning on-line no less...

Kind of a shame that you'll cover up a lot of that work with the skin.
Any thoughts of offering a version in a transparent toughened plastic/perspex/glass or similar?

David - I'm a mechanical engineer and I'm always amazed at the lengths you guys go to and the results you achieve. You very obviously love what you're doing.
I'm not surprised Denbeste ordered a twin to your setup table.
Your billet bill each month must be staggering!
Cheers,
Glen

That would be cool but the body dies would be expensive.

We will recycle 40,000 pounds of aluminum this week. (We've been saving up a bit).

We can eat over 1,000 pounds of aluminum in a day. Our new Mazak will probably carve off 40-50 pounds/minute. It sucks 400 amps of 240V.

Seeing those six cowl tubes coming together--with the cowl tube fitting perfectly--is extremely gratifying. I'm fortunate to have great guys who deeply care about their work.

David that jig is nice. I know how tuff t is to get then all in the right place without a chassis jig. Keep posting pictures of it in use it inspires me to work on mine.

Haha!
That made me spray my coke all over the keyboard!

Are you suggesting that by comparison the aluminium (copper, bronze or gold) skins are cheap? Or all that machine work for the coupe is?

Never mind, rhetorical question...
Now where are those wipes

indianamoon 07-28-2015 04:04 AM

Most impressive

I own a small machine shop where we do 3d cad design, machine various products, and build jigs and fixtures for other manufacturers, so can truly appreciate the time and effort that has gone into this work that you guys have done. Having the cad and actually putting it to work certainly does make life easier when it comes to putting together geometrically complicated products. Seeing something come together perfectly every time is truly a joy. Keep up the good work!!

400 amps? Wow the cutter must be stout to handle that. How many amps is the spindle?

40 hp main spindle
40 hp sub spindle
30 hp head

3 spindles and they can all cut at once.

I am not familiar with a machine of that nature. Is there a video of it in action?

This is similar to ours...but mine is bigger :)

We have a Mazak Integrex 420e

Remember that 400 amps I was talking about??? That is all the power to our entire building. We need to upgrade power.
