400 is not much. A power upgrade is not cheap either. I suspect in the scheme of that machine it is not significant. Did you need to buy software? Sometimes that is the staggering cost. I suspect you have all the modeling software.

400 amps is not much at all--we can't even use our new monster and I'm not happy about it. Upgraded power will run just under $100,000. Only the government can get away with charging you $$$ to sell you more product (impact fees). We don't own the building so I am hesitant to dump tons of money into upgrades. Also, we are completely out of space. I really need a new building.

We have lots of software here--both CAD and CAM. It is enormously expensive. We probably have $100,000 in software alone.

I am in the process of looking for a building. Around here there are 10,000 sq foot buildings and 100,000+. I'd like 40 with room to grow. Building new is expensive. We are busting at the seams also. They say good problem to have, doesn't feel like it. A new building is a big distraction from the core business.

100K for power is obscene especially if you don't own the building.
I will say one thing, the amount of work that can be done with electricity for the $ is incredible.

Ahhh, someone who understands the problem. Looking for property is a huge distraction. The more you look the less you produce. What is even more maddening is people who have "For Sale" signs on property that really don't want to sell. I have been at the signing 3 times now only to have more and more conditions added (after we already agreed on a price). Once I was literally at the title company when more conditions were added. I just got up and walked. People who waste my time are immediately cut off...forever.

The impact fees are unreal. We looked briefly in St. George but our builder told us to not even think about it. Impact fees are $200,000-$300,000. I guess we will keep looking in northern Utah. Sigh.

Impact fees?!?!
How about the impact of not creating revenue/taxes?

But consider yourself lucky. Out here, you have to collect gophers and find them a new hole.

Well, I can certainly relate as a builder. It's the same with water.
If you want to build a big building or housing development somewhere remote like, let's say Coachella Valley out by Palm Springs you get pounced upon to pay for all upgrades to the infrastructure and all services from someplace unknown to your desired location. BUT, that's not just for you. That's to supply the whole new area you just picked and for future development. And when you are done, you pay up sucker or no water.

These particular folks were actually raided years ago by the FBI for racketeering..

As far as power, same drill in many locations. You come in with a requirement for a bunch of power, they lick their chops. I actually had a client that was charged for a sub station just for his facility. And he was bringing a ton of jobs and tax money to the area.

OK, I'm done venting.;)

Doesnt sound too much different to down under, utility providers that have rules to suit themselves and they write them rules so that they have no competition and then extract as much cashola from you as humanly possible.

I always love the way that they expect/demand payment in advance of doing the job and then give unrealistic time frames for delivery.
