Billet Aluminum Chassis Fixtur--Daytona Coupes We Are Making For Shelby
Hey Guys,
We've been a little quiet around here lately. Here is the latest out of Kirkham Motorsports Skunkworks.
This is a billet aluminum chassis fixture for the Daytona Coupes we are making for Shelby.
Thought you might like a sneak peak.

This is the rear of the backbone. It is a spiderweb of tubes that all have to be held together perfectly. The tubes are all laser cut.

Nice! Do you mind if bring my chassis I am building next weekend and see how it fits your jig? Just kidding! I sure had to use my imagination to get all my tubes in the proper place with no jig.

That's some dedication. The design and machine time must be immense.
Truly industrial art.

If you guys look really, really closely you can see the tubes are almost--almost--a perfect fit. It is very hard to see in a photo. The camera makes it look like there is a bit of a gap in the fitment...
BUT...
We were very, very careful to draw and program the tubes so the laser would cut the intersecting tube normal to the surface (of that same tube). If you cut one tube absolutely tangent to another tube the edge will feather out, thinning to nothing. That "nothing" is actually so thin (like thinner than paper) when you weld the tubes together the steel will literally boil, burn, and contaminate the weld.
I'll try to get a close up so you can see what I am talking about. It's a bit hard to explain.

You guys are having way too much fun doing this stuff. it speaks volumes about what to expect from the final product when even your tooling is jewelry-grade quality.
