Since I will have this question brought up to me this year, It will be done by late Mar. or early Apr. I've done some thinking, on how to answer this fun, and sometimes funny question. I believe I'll use the answer Joe (Old School Garage owner) When asked about the Cobra. He go's over touches it, and say's yes it is, but not one of the org. one's from the 60's. Cheers Tom.

I usually respond, "oh no, I wouldn't dare drive a million dollar car around here!" - often accompanied by a short chuckle at the absurdity of the question.

I've had that before.

Me: I'll be repainting this car one day, (only came in one colour, limited run).

Him: What colour?

Me: Do you know what this is? (Idiot, plus a few other words under breath).

not necessarily, there are many tool room replicas out there, which cannot be differentiated from an original

When someone asks me if it's real I usually just say "It's real fast" They get a laugh out of it and we both move on.

Yup, I don't take offense to the question. Like others have said, most suspect it is not one of the original REAL Cobra's. I tell them with a chuckle No but I had a lot to do with building this one. Conversation will follow one of two ways.. "Man that's beautiful, always wanted one" smile and wave goodby. or "who made it?" what engine? how fast does it go? Do you race it? Can you start it up?......

I tell em, “No it’s not. I could never afford a real one. I would be afraid to cut loose and have fun in an original like I do in my FFR.

It depends on how I feel at the time and who's asking the question. Sometimes I just say yes sometimes I just smile sometimes I say no you're having the best dream you've ever had in your life.

I simply say "she is a very faithful reproduction built in 1992, with period correct drivetrain and parts. However the body is fiberglass and the frame is of an improved design. And she is a joy to drive."

Usually that brings miles of smiles....

I get just as many shout out questions - "What year is that?" Not sure if they want to know when it was built, or what it represents?

The most often question that I get asked is "What kind of car is that?"

Since it's the easiest way to extricate myself from any conversation, I always tell them "it's a Jaguar. XK-(make up a number)something."

It's about as close as you can get and still enjoy driving it.

I just smile, look them right in the eye, shake my head, and in a straight forward and welcoming manner say “It’s not an original”.

That generally satisfies their curiosity and either ends it (if they’re a hater) or if genuinely interested, as more often than not, they follow up with, when was it built, what manufacturer, did you built it, etc., and we go from there.

My alternate reality….I cycle through all the options in my head, “you should say this, you shouldn’t say that, it’s not called this, it’s really called that, maybe it’s called this, but he said it’s this, the documents say it's that,’ and as the person walks off wondering why the heck I’m standing there just staring through him, I realize, darn it, I didn’t think fast enough, I should have just directed him to our prior threads on the topic! ☺

I tell them “yes, it is a real, aluminum-bodied Shelby Cobra, but unfortunately not one of the rare originals from the sixties”. Then, if they ask what is the difference, I tell them “about a million dollars!”
