Simon, you'd be surprised just how well stainless headers keep the heat inside the pipe, similar to a coated mild steel header. That's why you rarely see coated stainless headers. I use stainless headers on pretty much all the vehicles we build in our shop.

David, I work with a header manufacturer right down the road from me, who is very experianced and worked for one of the most well known custom headers shops in the country. They had several Cobra header accounts when he was there. He is not currently doing any Cobra headers that I know of, but I'm sure he'd love to be doing them. If you need a new supplier for headers, I can get you set up with them, and it would also be nice because I can be sort of the middle man for you as far as keeping tabs on progress and quality.

With that said, do you currently have a source for FE headers and sidepipes for my Kirkham? I really want a set that has the original pipe into muffler shape.

Power Surge,

We are currently working on making our own headers. We just bought a mandrel bender and will start learning how to use it this next week. I imagine it will take us a couple of months, however, to figure out how to make nice pipes. I know it is a very difficult job to make them nice. So don't anyone hold their breath! This is a field I have never ventured into before.

Suprisingly, 321 stainless has one of the lowest thermal transfers of any material. As for the low percentages of chrome, or any other alloying agent, you would be amazed at what a little bit of some things can do. Such as carbon in steel. The addition of 0.8% carbon, (less than 1 percent), will make mild steel so hard they use it for razor blades. The addition of 0.5% carbon makes normal mild steel good enough for most mass produced connecting rods in cars.

Would you be making them to fit High Riser heads? I would be interrested in them. I'm putting together a High-Tech Aluminum Cobra and I talked to you about 2 months ago about buying parts to finish it. Let me know Michael4yah@msn.com
Thanks

Michael,

There should not be a problem with HR heads. Let me know if we can help.

Thanks David, Let me know when you get setup. I have a set of Dove Highriser heads that take a slightly different bolt pattern but the rest is the same. It sure would be a big help to me if you could make this happen.

Unhappy

No,

We sure have some "bent" tubes though!

Actually, it is not as hard as I thought it would be.

The machine is really great. I can't believe how easily that thing can bend tubes. What a beast.

I will keep you updated on the parts.

Just build them yourself!! I'm no expert, and I was able to do equal length mild steel headers, and set of stainless side pipes at home in the garage. MIG welder+grinder=TIG welder only for a lot less money, and much less skill required. I would not try stainless headers because butt welding stainless is not easy, and I wanted the thermal properties of ceramic coating under the hood.

-Jon

(This is hi temp paint, I'll have them coated after final fitting)

Michael Le Fevers, I think weve talked before, probably on CC. Do you have any photos of your Stainless headers/sidepipes. I have a Hi Tech aluminum car which is real close to the original. Openings were done with the body and look to be in original locations. My heads though are aluminum hi riser from Dove which means flange has a bunch of bolt holes and may be slightly higher than med or low risers. Michael
