David,
I would guess that the copper is much easier to polish to a high luster than aluminum. Would that offset some of the upcharge for polished aluminum?

David, C.P. (Commercially Pure/unalloyed Titanium) is relatively soft and easy to weld and form. It is the more alloyed up aerospace alloys like 90 Ti -6 AL - 4 V that are so tough to work. The Ti body would look so cool, I might even stop fantasizing about the Willys for a while. It would require zero maintanance as C.P is as corrossion resistant as any material available. Ti is getting very very expensive right now due to a shortage of Ti Sponge used in the production of the metallic form. Maybe from Eastern Bloc though, a lot of Ti produced in Russia. I would not expect anything more than a fully flushed out roller in Ti in appreciation for the encouragement towards the project.

Will your company have a presence at the Carlisle Replica show on the weekend of May 20th? There will be a lot of cobra owners there. If not there, will you be at Cleveland for DVSF-V on Juen 24,25,26th?

Ok David,
I figured it up... For a 10' x 20' sheet it should only cost 51,200 pennies (1 penny is 3/4"). Of course there would be holes where the pennies don't touch so lets double it up. So $1024 should cover the cost right?
Am I missing something besides labor cost?

Mattr762, the problem is that pennies are no longer made with solid copper, so you would have to spend a lot of time sorting for the old solid copper pennies. Other than that and all the welding, your thinking is flawless...

I have never worked with CP. I understand it is quite soft, with unparalleled corrosion resistance, but it work hardens like crazy. The labor involved in learning to would a new material like that would be expensive--albeit, quite cool looking.

I am not sure about Carlisle or DVSV right now. I will let you know as soon as possible. We are just trying to keep up right now.

We spent an incredible amount on copper! Unfortunately, copper sheets are not available, in Poland at least, in the normal large sizes we are used to using on our cars. We were forced to use smaller sheets and therefore piece the car together with lots of smaller sheets, creating an incredible amount of wasted material. For example, some parts, like the hood, are usually made out of one piece of material. We had to use 2 complete sheets of copper to make the hood and the large pieces that were left over were then too small to use anywhere else. We had a huge pile of copper when we were finished. The copper mill thought we were crazy.

You are right, pennies are now made out of zinc because the copper in a penny is worth more than a penny.

Instead of glass you could do lexan! Then do like the R/C cars and paint the inside so it never scratches or leave it clear.

How about Aluminum car with Copper stripes or Copper car wit Aluminum Stripes? Not sure how you would weld it.

I stopped by Kirkhams on my way to work today. That car looks good in pictures, but it is absolutley amazing in person. It makes me grin from ear to ear just thinking about it.

I weighed the copper car today. 224 pounds heavier--that's a lot of copper considering we were only able to use about 50%-60% of the sheets when all was said and done.

On the OCC Chopper episode they had aluminium parts dipped and coated with copper (then clear coated). Maybe that could be a better way of making your copper cars cheaper? You could probably selectively coat stripes, or negative stripes?

David, Would it be feasible to make a Cobra FRAME from aluminum, to go with the aluminum body?
And is the Stainless frame heavier or lighter than the regular steel frame?
