I weighed an aluminum 427 engine today!
Fellow Car Nuts:
We just received a complete, aluminum 427 engine with a top-loader transmission…so, I WEIGHED IT! I figured you all would like to know.
663 pounds
complete, running 427 engine and transmission combination
Shelby aluminum engine block
Edelbrock heads
Edelbrock performer rpm intake manifold
coil
iron top loader 4 speed transmission
transmission shift linkage
aluminum flywheel
clutch and pressure plate
engine mounts
water pump pulley
water pump aluminum Edelbrock
Lakewood scatter shield
motor mounts
alternator
alternator brackets
radiator puke tank
Holley 850 Carburetor
MSD wires
spark plugs
Shelby cast aluminum valve covers
Aviad oil pan
Carter mechanical fuel pump
Harmonic balancer
An iron top loader transmission is 93 pounds and the shift linkage is 7 pounds for 100 pounds of that weight. The bell housing, flywheel, and clutch assembly must weigh close to 100 pounds as well…I need to weigh an assembly to really find out. So, a complete aluminum 427 must weigh close to 463 pounds. I will get an exact number and post it as soon as possible.
Just thought you’d all like to know.

David,
Being the alloy maniac that you are , you should try an Innovators West balancer.
Took 3lbs off the nose of my crank and is beautiful and trouble free to boot.
George sells them and the IW guys are good guys too.

That pretty much agrees with my weight figure: I scaled a complete-but-bare Shelby (carb and flywheel included, but no clutch, bell housing or trans) at 460 lbs. My recollection was that the Toploader I weighed was a bit more - 110+ lbs.

Gee Dave, You might be able to get an aluminum trans from David Kee.
Knock that down a bit more.

Dwight,
Too much! Actually, I don't know how much it cost as it is a customer's engine we are working on.
ERA Chas,
I haven't heard of the Innovators West balancer. I will need to try one on my car sometime. I am always in to reduce the rotating mass.
strictlypersonl,
Did you weigh your top-loader with the shifter? Yoke? Maybe something else. We have now weighed 2 transmissions at just under 95 pounds.
trularin,
I will give up the 15 pound weight penalty and go with 5 gears for my next project. As I said, this is another customer's car we are setting up for him and he already had an iron top-loader for his ride.

So are you installing motors and trannys now as an option?

Apparently, if the car is being shipped outside the US, or if it is to be used purely as a racer, then they can and will install the engine and 'box.
That was what David told me a week or so ago.
Cheers

TC,
In my opinion, your unfortunate and malicious insinuation we are illegally installing engines into turn-key cars for sale in the US is, once again, very wrong.
The engine we have from our customer here is going into a car that is RIGHT HAND DRIVE—as in, the car will be exported OUT of the country. I do not believe the US Department of Transportation cares, or has any jurisdiction over, people who are not citizens of, or who do not reside in, the United States. I know I would be very unhappy if government agents from Zimbabwe told me I couldn’t do something here in the US.
Paul,
Thank you for your kind words.

I just went out and took a picture of the car. As you can see, the roll bar is on the right hand side.
