David: Tire Question

In a thread on All Cobra Talk, I read that you chose to supply Yoko Avid ST's for the 427 car. Would you mind sharing the tech and subjective reasons which led to that choice? Specifically how the car handles and feels in a variety of usages.

Tom K. has responded but some posts were lost in the recent crash.
He rated the Yokos well but conceded that the G'years were the best of the bias type. Sorry I don't remember his verbatim comments.

TIRES:

We have used the following tires: Yoko Avid ST, Dunlop GT Qualifier, Goodyear Eagle II, and Goodrich Radial TA. These tires feel similar to each other on the street. The Yoko has the newest rubber compound with more silicon in the tires. This makes the Yokos longer lasting and softer. I have listed the tires in order of my preference with the first two being much better than the last two. Even on the street, I felt that the Radial TAs were not as grippy or responsive as the Yokos, and Dunlops. The first two tires also have a higher speed rating (T) than the other two tires (S).

We have also used the following biased ply tires: Hoosier Street TD, Hoosier Autocrosser, and Goodyear Sports Car Specials. The Hoosiers have outstanding grip and work great on the track. On the street, the tires will track on every crack in the road. It is a major difference in how the car feels and drives with Hoosiers vs. any of the above radials for normal driving. I do not like them on the street for this reason. The Goodyear’s have great grip, and track much better. They have fragile sidewalls, fling rocks, and will wear out very quickly. In my opinion, the Goodyear tire is the best-looking. Of course, all the above is also my opinion.

When the system went down for a couple of days it was restored with a 2 day old 'backup'. Thus posts during that two day time frame are lost and cannot be recovered.

Lucky Big Boss had copied that post somewhere and could retrieve it! Good stuff.

I think Tom was being 'to kind' concerning the TA's. I would rate them 'dangerous' because of their serious lack of traction. The bill board Goodyears wear out to quickly? , I don't drive enough miles to worry about wearing ANY tire out. I opted for the Goodyears for one simple reason: I want as much traction as I get for a STREET environment in order to maintain maximum control.

I like the look of the billboards... But, supposing you get involved in an ouch while driving. The investigator notices you have NON DOT tires on the car. Now what?
