somebody stop me!

I am thinking about polishing the beer can! I have read the instructions and it really doesn't sound that hard. I can't believe it would take 300 hours as they say. (this is starting to sounds like a lot of other projects I have done that turned out to be very difficult) Someone give me some advice! Share your experience.

ROUSHAC 08-26-2006 04:19 PM

Dean,

I like your car as it is now, but the full mirror look is nice too.

I say "Go for it!!!"

Besides the fact that it's your 300 hours, not mine, it will keep you out of trouble this winter. :)

Cheers!
Dave

Have you seen the pictures of Brent after he finished? Dark gray, he was the 'alloy' man. :D

ENTDOC 08-26-2006 05:13 PM

Dean,I am thinking about the same thing this winter. There is apparently a group out of Charlotte NC that refinishes oil tankers , milk tankers ect. and I am going to talk with them about doing mine.

Clois Harlan 08-26-2006 05:23 PM

Dean I think it's time to sell your ride or paint it! If you don't have enough to do then get down here and I will put you to work.

I have heard stories about how much you like to paint!

It wouldn't take 300 hours to drive to SC and have a beer with you while they polish our cars would it? Keep me posted.

hey,littlecobra 08-26-2006 07:51 PM

Dean, your car looks really nice right now... I'm sure the guys that have polished theirs are happy with it, but it seems to take huge amounts of time, and work. Here is Brent, in a pic I stole out of his gallery. You'll have to ask him if he'd do it over again. Looks like a tough, messy, dirty job.

Dean,
I spent every bit of 300 hours on mine. Let is sit like that for 2 weeks and decided I liked the brushed finish better. Sanded it back off in about 2 hours.

That picture of Brent was on a clean day.

Don't do it unless you want to constantly maintain it.

Excaliber 08-26-2006 08:49 PM

I recently saw an older brushed (not polished) Kirkham here in the Islands, with polished stripes. It was 'showing it's age', even the brushed finish could have used some clean up, not to mention the polished stripe. Either way I guess it's not that easy maintaining a bare finish car.

Then again, some people feel the same way about a high quality 'show finish paint job'. Takes a lot of work and worry to keep it really nice. There is something to be said for an average finish...

I polished KMP218x , then scotchbrited all but the stripes.see gallery. No way would I polish another one. 218x was file finish when I started it.

Count on the 300hrs plus the frustration of chasing your tail all the time. I like the finish, but I would save the dough and pay someone else the next time. It is a serious pain and it is tremendously dirty.

Don't touch it! Your car is perfect as it is! Start a different project!:MECOOL:

PatBuckley 08-26-2006 11:32 PM

I can't remember if I polished mine or not, but if I did I don't think I would do it again.

Scott M Jackson 08-26-2006 11:53 PM

Has anyone looked into coatings that allow you to maintain the polished finish without repolishing. I know that the airlines have something that goes onto the airframe that retains their appearance. The manufacturer restricts them from polishing it because the surface then begins to dull. As I recall, on a small turboprop it was a 130K option. Again, there were specific maintenance proceedures.

No, Dean...STOP!

trularin 08-27-2006 06:16 AM

OKay, stop.

You wanted a red, blue, silver, titainium, green, yellow one anyway.

:D

dlampe 08-27-2006 06:24 AM

Alright! I guess I won't do it this afternoon!:JEKYLHYDE I saw a polished car in London OH this year and it just created a spark. Jay Nordstrom told me way back then that I wasn't man enough to drive a polished car! I guess there is a reason the Kirkhams get almost $14,000 to polish one.

i wana go fast 09-09-2006 04:53 PM

sealing a pollished body

there is a product that i know of (when i was selling parts). the stuff is the best thing since sliced bread as far as i am concerned. it is a couple step process but it works for a long time and is better than any wax i have ever used on a painted surface. it is called Zoopseal. dave

trularin 09-09-2006 06:13 PM

Dean, does this mean I will not see a mirror polished car at London next year???

:D :D
