Default NEW!!! 2 Piece 427 Carburetor Cold Air Box

Fellow Car Nuts:

We got really frustrated with the original style cold air boxes. They made putting on your carburetor tuning it a real pain. (Not for me as Thomas does all that work )

So, more accurately, Thomas got pissed off and made this new part to relieve himself (and all of you) the headaches.

You can use this cold air box to give your motor that "original competition look." It will need to be slightly trimmed to fit--depending upon which carburetor and intake manifold you are using. It was designed to fit on an FE Ford (390, 428, and 427). Due to the shorter distance between the carb and the distributor it will not work on a small block Ford 289, 302 or 351).

The purpose of a cold air box is to lower the temperature of the incoming air into your carburetor by shielding it from the engine heat. The colder air makes for a denser fuel air charge and makes for MORE HORSEPOWER. You can lower the intake charge temperature even further by using rubber weather stripping on the edge of the box to seal it to the underside of your hood. This is the latest creation from Kirkham Motorsports. We (Thomas) were tired of having to remove the carburetor every time we wanted to work on it because the original style cold air box was in the way. Also, it is difficult to install a carburetor with the original cold air box on your motor. So, we took a hint from the Ford GT40 MKIIB and made the top removable. Now, with our new 2 piece unit, you can easily install the bottom of your cold air box first, then install your carburetor, hook up your throttle linkage, and finally TUNE your carb without the cold air box being in the way. Simply mount and install the sides of the cold air box with 8 screws and you are done. When you need to readjust the carb simply remove the 8 screws and make your adjustments. No more headaches!

This cold air box is also a LOT cheaper than the 1 piece cold air boxes we make by hand in Poland. The original style cold air box is $425 (it is extremely difficult and time consuming to make). Our new 2 piece box retails for $250.

A few pics:

And a NEW YEAR'S SPECIAL!!! This normally retails for $250. For the next two weeks, we will sell them to Club Cobra members for $200 (+shipping).

Thanks,

Thomas got bent when he was trying to tune in all those carburetors at the track and spoke the famous words...

"There HAS to be a better way!"

Also, I figure I should post this. We have taken a LONG hard look at advertising lately and decided the print stuff is expensive and doesn't work very well. Decided not to renew Hemmings today and thank goodness we didn't go with other mags that have now gone by the wayside.

So, we are going to try eBay, Google, and cranking up our website. It seems that is the way everyone is going now. There are just so few people who don't know how to use the internet now.

Here is the cold air box on eBay.

I should also add:

We made this cold air box slightly bigger so you could run a 9 inch air cleaner with no problems. The modern engines of today like LOTS of air.

Can the 2 part box still be made with the 90deg lip- or does the foam slide on the edge?

We left the 90 degree lip off for 2 reasons:

1: It is more expensive to make when the edge is turned.

2: We left it straight so the rubber seal would be easier to place on the edge. I should have shown a picture of the rubber seal. I'll do that. Also, in case some one has a very tall motor and a short hood, you can trim the straight edge quite easily to fit your hood for a good seal.

I will see if I can find a photo of the rubber seal. Good point...we should include the seal in the sale. I think the best seal is the same one that we use on the edge of the interior panels. You just simply glue it on.

I would think it would be along the lines of a weatherstripping size, similar to the Shaker-type hood scoops. I would interested in seeing a pic of this seal on an original car, if they used them.

The pan looks great and what a great idea. Is it true that you lose 10-20hp from the original t. pan ? I think the looks out weigh the slite hp loss..

The weather stripping we use is 3/8 x 7/8 with a slit in it so it sits right over the edge. Forgot to get a pic of that today. I will post a pic tomorrow.

The original cars didn't use weather stripping on the cold air box.

Thanks for the kind words. Actually, Kinetic Racing Engines did tests with the turkey pan and found a very significant reduction in the intake air temperature. I don't remember all the numbers, but they wanted them on all their cars after that. They did the test with the original style. This one (with a hood seal) should do even better.
