Floor Jack Question
Warning: Dumb question.
I want to buy a new floor jack from Harbor Freight, since that seems like one of a few good choices after reading many past threads. Here's my question. The Kirkham has a round tube frame, but the floor jack has a flat "saddle." Is a flat saddle OK to use to lift a round-tubed car or do they make a floor jack that has a concave-surfaced saddle to fit the round tube frame better? Thank you.

Just get one with a rubber pad on the jack and it will be fine.
Never seen one with a curved surface.

Rodknock:
I know of no (guud inglish?) saddles that are specifically made for the round tubes however they could be fabricated or the existing saddle modified. A method I have urotected the rectangular powdercoated frame (mine) is to put a heavy pad made of a folded towel on the jack saddle making sure that it is entirely covered before contacting the frame. This has worked well. Same for the Jack stands when in use.

I've never owned a car with a round-tubed frame before. I've got some really old jack stands and floor jack and I thought I would buy some new stuff for my new-ish Cobra.

You could always pick up a chunk of delrin (sp?) and have it machined to match the frame rail one side and jack saddle on the other... Might want it to hang over the edges of the saddle for stability.

My car has a square frame but I found out most of the car jacks would scratch up my powder coated frame. However my Craftsman Pro motorcycle jack works perfectly, protects the frame and makes a really stable lift since it is wide body.

I just stick a small wood block between the jack and the frame - has never
slipped or marked anything.

Rodney - The jackstands that I bought from Summit have kind of a cradle shape that would be good for a round frame. I also bought the matching teflon covers to prevent scratching the frame up.

I try to place the jack pad at the intersection of the main frame rails and one of the heavy crossmembers...a bit more contact space. From the front by sliding a little sideways under the brake cooling holes, and for the rears just in front of each rear tire but behind the sidepipe.
Scratches?...patina A little black paint twice a year.

floor jack
Hello, I took a piece of 5" round delrin and machined a 4" round in one end and a 1.5" round boss in the other end to fit directly into the jack. It works great on the 3" 289 chassis and the 4" 427 chassis.

The alum jacks from Harbor Freight were not without lots of problems. MY son's buddy worked there and said they had lots of returns on those. Yes they are low profile as are the expensive race jacks they copied but you get what you pay for.
I would not raise my Cobra with a cheap jack. Maybe my truck but not my Cobra.
Having said that, I once had a top of the line Walker engine hoist. When loaded it absolutely could not be squeezed off without dropping about 12 inches before control could be regained. Very scary when lowering an engine. Be careful with hydraulics
And also for the low clearance Cobra, ck out the ABS ramps that are graduated. As you drive on they lift the car 3" so you can get a floor jack under the Cobra. They will alllow you to use a regular common height floor jack. Those are availalbe at calcarcover.com.
Just my 2 cts worth-get a good jack for your Cobra.

RodKnock, you have a 100K Cobra, why are you looking a 100.00 jacks. don't buy a cheap jack, buy something you can trust. remember to always use jack stands and not the jack alone.

My cheap floor jack from Sears that's about 30 years old is/was working just fine with my '66 Corvette (that I no longer own). The more expensive jacks at Harbor Freight are either the rapid pump or have increased lifting capacity (4,000 lbs versus 3,000 lbs). My Kirkham is less than 2,150 lbs and I'll only be lifting 1/2 the car at a time.
Do you have any suggestions?

While you're at Harbour Freight pick up the rubber pad they sell for the jack saddle. They also sell jackstand rubber pads as well.

I got the 3000 lb aluminum jack from Harbor Freight for $79 + $9.95
shipping to Texas. I used it for moving my 4 post parts around when I built
it and had no problems with it. worked very smoothly. I'll try it on my
rental car first when I get back to Texas.

Don't worry about it. I've been using my cheap ($79) HF aluminum jack on my Cobra and P-cars for years, and never had a problem. It's a freakin' jack, not exactly difficult to manufacture. Could it be more precisely built? Yes. Does it need to be? No.

Go to a sporting goods store and buy a hockey puck to go in the saddle. Thats what I use on my C5 corvette and it works well. A puck cost $1.50 or so. Good luck.
