Default Can't get spinners off

Hi,

I'm having a really hard time getting my spinners off. I use the recommended silver anti-seize. I made a hammer like the Kirkhams use at their shop made out of a BIG piece of nylon rod. I've even tried using a small hand held sledge to hit the nylon hammer like I saw Tom do when I had my car in Provo once. Still no luck.

What kind of hammers are others using? Lead? How heavy?

Is there a trick with the angle?

Do people regularly pull their spinners off on a regular basis so they don't get so tight?

Thanks

len

I'll be the first to post the usual cautionary reply.. :-)

...you are trying to spin them in the correct direction?

Either side..rotatiing toward the front of the car to remove.

Get a 4lb. plastic dead blow hammer and beat the hell out of them untill they loosen. Shouldn't have to be a project.

I had a 4 lb nylon hammer and couldn't get my spinners loose (regardless of how hard I tried or the technique used).

So I purchased a 6 lb lead hammer (affectionately referred to as the MutherThumper), and I was able to get my spinners right off (without any problem).

It works like a charm.

Lead hammer with tire on ground. Forget the plastic stuff, wood 2 by 4's and other garbage tools.

Make sure you are hitting the spinner ear in the correct direction.
Make sure you are hitting the spinner ear in the correct direction.
Make sure you are hitting the spinner ear in the correct direction.

Keep on hitting it.
Slowly but surely, it will come off.

My spinners came off for the first time at 15K miles. It took a lot of hits, but they finally did loosen up.

Use never seize on threads. Do a search on "never seize" and you will find tons of good info on spinner removal.

If you can't wait to buy a proper hammer and you have a heavy regular hammer (a small sledge), just get a short piece of 2x4 or similar, and place it on the spinner. Hit the wood with the hammer as hard as you can. Keep doing that until it comes off. Keep the grain of the wood in line with the strike of the hammer.

Yep, am going the correct direction, unless the Kirkhams drew the arrors in the wrong direction. (Which they didn't. I've had them off before, but it's been a while.)

I always use antiseize. Jeremy gave me a quick training course when I first picked up my car.

THanks for the tips.

Len,

The esiest way to take them off is to come on down and give us a visit! We'll figure it out and I'd be happy to wait for you. Besides, there are all sorts of interesting things we could talk about.

Also, Brent DeHart is down here (KMP530) so we might as well have a party.

First off when all else fails a lead hammer has always done the trick. The lead hammers are a little kinder to the wing nut than the brass hammers. However with the metal hammers if you miss the wing nut, you will put a smile in the rim and a frown on your face.

Believe it or not, there is also a technique in hitting the wing nut with the hammer. You want to hit the ear square. This is not to hard to do on the front rims but can be difficult on the rear...

What I try and do is snap my wrist just as soon as the hammer head clears the rim so that the hammer strikes the knock off ear square. What you want to avoid doing is having the hammer come in at an angle and bend the ear in.

Hope this helps,

Not to be paranoid... But we need to make sure we're not overheard by the three "amigos"

Is that sacrilegious?

What I really wonder about is what would have happened yesterday?

Lift the tire off the ground.
Use a hair drier to heat the spinner.
Use a lead hammer to strike the spinner (squarely).
Rotate the wheel 120 degrees.
Strike the spinner.
Rotate the spinner 120 degrees
Strike the spinner.
Rotate the spinner 120 degrees.
Strike the spinner.
Rotate the spinner 120 degrees.
Etc..

After you get them off, use a reasonable amount of torque putting them back on.
Use safety wire (and a lead hammer).

Bob

On the 9th?

Probably just a severe beating about the face, and being sent to your room...

kobrabytes -- the "swing" is similar to what you do with a spring shafted blackjack or sap, you want to "whip" your wrist at the last second for a controlled, but high speed, impact. Speed is the key to delivering the blow.

Ah... I guess you're just going to have to trust that I do know somewhat what I'm doing here. The urge to beat the living $h!t out of the spinner with my sledge occurred for only a brief second. I've ordered a lead hammer.

This is reminiscent of the time I used a 6 foot breaker bar on my 67 cuda to twist the studs off the right side of the car, or was it the left? After that I replaced them all with the right hand threaded studs...

I'm glad I've been able to bring so many joy on this day!
