Default Cool Finish on a Kirkham

This car (not mine but its nice enough that I wish it was...) was brushed and then coated with a PPG matte clear coat. I think it looks great.

Beautiful - but will it oxidize under the clear and in the stone chips?

Yep, it has the black roll bar, side pipes, wheel centers, jack hooks, and Kirkey racing seats as well. It is a good looking car. The owner is 6' 6" and so he got the seats and the dropped foot box so that he could fit.

Not sure about chips. I would be tempted to add a clear bra on the front and rear flares. Hopefully the owner will let us know how it holds up after a few thousand miles.

It looks like it's on display in a showroom. If so, then the finish should hold up well.

I love the look! Seems it should hold up as well as a paint job....and all it implies like chips here and there over time. If so it will keep the luster.

Looks great!

If you don't get any chips (or maybe a BB dent in the Kirkham), then you ain't drvin' it enough!

BTW - Is the "Cobra" painted on the radiator standard? If so, they should reverse so people can read it in the rear-view mirror.

The problem is you can't fix any scratches without removing the clear.

how are people supposed to read it in their mirrors if the cobra is out in front?

I was thinking more like the car in front of you needs to move out of the way.

I think that is the key the matt finish clear. I was going to try it but just ran out of time. After comming back from Provo I essentially need to resand my car from the weather stains-- pretty much a pain in butt.

Hehe, it is in a showroom. But it is not just a display piece. Any car guy would be envious of the opportunity to drive where this car will get driven. And yes, it will get driven.

I can't wait to see how it holds up to the chips etc... If it works, I think it will be a great way to take care of a car with a brushed finish. I have heard that it is difficult to keep clear over bare aluminum looking good but products and processes keep getting better. If it doesn't work well in the long run then at least we will know. If it does work, it will be a very cool option for the aluminum car crowd.

I will update as time goes on.

How did they get clearcoat to stick to bare aluminum-its not made for that? Metal needs a etch or epoxy primer for adhesion. I think it will peel off in sheets-looks good though.
