Default First Show of the Year

Last weekend saw the first show of the year with over 200 Cobras in attendance. Mine was the only ali Cobra there, resplendant in its new polished finish.

Someone at the show suggested that it was illegal to have a fully polished car, but having since had a good look on the web, I haven't found anything to substantiate that claim.

So would that make an airstream trailer illegal?

Also from an environmental standpoint, not having paint sprayed on the car make it less harsh on the planet. When I painted my jeep we used a cyanide based primer, that wasn't even good for the painter.

I have a friend who is a police officer who also thought a polished car was/would be illegal, although from a person who has memorized the penal codes, he could not recite any specific passage. I'll bet they could write something up under a more general health, human safety & welfare portion of the code, if they desired.

Maybe if they looked up "jealousy" they might find something substantive?

Sounds like a fun show to go to... sorry I couldn't be there to make it 2, but my KMP doesn't swim too good!

Isn't it odd how they spend so much time trying to make everything illegal.

Pass enough laws and everyone becomes a criminal.

I met 2 other owners of Kirkhams at the show, but they were both in the early stages of very prolonged builds, so I was the only one actually there.

It certainly attracted a LOT of attention. I only got it back from being polished late the previous day, so I was in the garage until the late hours bolting everything back on again. A full polished finish wasn't actually what I intended or wanted, but now that's what I have, I'm very pleased with it.
Ask me in a years time if I'm still so enthusiastic about it.

Paul, out of curiosity, did you have brushed stripes, have a polishing mistake, and then just decided to polish the whole darn enchilada?

This is my fear. I get out the cyclo, do my best taping job (which isn''t saying much) on the brushed stripes and then oops! There goes the brushed stripes, then voila! All polished.

No, it was in the raw filed finish. I took it to the body shop with the instruction to get the best even finish all over for a given budget, which would give them 1 week of labour time. They called me some time later to ask me to come and have a look at one fender they had done and to say that the budget I had given them wasn't enough.
However, when I saw the bit they had done, which was fully polished, a new price was agreed for the whole body. This also included all the return edges for the doors, trunk and hood and all inside the front openings. Looking at the pictures on the Kirkham website, the finish may not be quite as perfect, but it is very good and you would be hard pressed to pick fault with it.
I'm sure that extra <1% of perfection takes a whole lot more time and effort, but mine cost less than 25% of what it would have cost from KMS and they were very carefull to take the absolute minimum of material off.

Thanks Jamo. From someone who has ready access to many Kirkham Cobras in various finishes, your approval means something (to me at least)

Paul

Well done.

You must have gotten the ole "chrome paint" question at the show?

Yup.
....but some people still felt compelled to touch it or even wrap it with their knuckles "just to check"

Yes, I totally understand.

Gives new meaning to the phrase "Real One" (i.e., NOT CHROME!)
